Right when we were all excited for a Connor vs Connor matchup and seeing the Blackhawks at full strength with Bedard back in the lineup… it was Bedard who got sick and was not in the lineup. Spencer Knight was really good, and the skaters in front of him were also very active with their sticks. It took 14:46 into the third period for the next goal to be scored, and it cut the Oilers’ lead in half. Unfortunately, the Oilers scored into the empty net just inside the final minute of regulation to push their lead back to two. And eight seconds later Wyatt Kaiser found… Leon Draisaitl for a quick goal to make the Edmonton lead three.
Star 1: Slaggert—Dickinson—Mikheyev
If there was ever a night that a minus-two didn’t tell you how a line of skaters played, it was tonight for these three guys. Even though McDavid’s line was on the ice when the Oilers scored their goal in the first period, the Blackhawks’ line of Landon Slaggert, Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev did a really nice job defending them in the first. Late in the period, the scoreboard showed Slaggert hitting 19 mph while skating next to McDavid on a rush.
At 5-on-5 in the first period, these three Blackhawks were on the ice together for 4:25, had an expected goals for percentage of 73.51 and 0.37 expected goals for. Yeah, the goals he allowed weren’t flashy but he made some huge saves throughout this game to give his team a chance to come back. He stopped 31 of 33 before coming off the ice for the extra attacker (and subsequent Kaiser turnover).
