Irvine Novaquatics’ Max Stewart has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the fall of 2026.

Stewart raced in Austin at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin (SCY). There, he put forth one of his best performances of his career. The Irvine, Calif., native had his highest finish in the 1650 freestyle, where he finished 12th overall in 15:18.44. He also earned finals swims in the 500 free (22nd, 4:26.50) and 400 IM (3:55.39). He notched best times in the prelims of both of those swims, clocking 4:25.99 in the 500 free and 3:53.97 in the 400 IM. Stewart also threw down a best time in the 200 back in 1:49.02.

Closing out his summer, Stewart competed at the Summer Junior National Championships (LCM). Stewart managed to make one individual finals appearance, placing 15th overall in the 200 fly in 2:04.11; he clocked a best time in prelims of 2:02.01. He finished 30th in the 800 free (8:19.04), 40th in the 400 IM (4:32.12), and 58th in the 400 free (4:02.70).

Stewart represents Woodbridge High School in Irvine, where he is in his senior season. As a junior, Stewart finished 15th in the 500 free at the CIF State Championship, stopping the clock in 4:30.99. He also raced the 100 fly, finishing 32nd in 50.09. He also led off a pair of relays for Woodbridge, including the 200 medley relay, where his 24.04 backstroke leg helped lead Woodbridge to an 18th-place finish in 1:33.96. His opening 100 free split of 46.73 led Woodbridge to their 3:05.81 400 free relay and 13th place finish.

Best Times SCY:

200 Free: 1:40.93 500 Free: 4:25.99 1000 Free: 9:15.81 1650 Free: 15:18.44 200 IM: 1:52.25 400 IM: 3:53.97 200 Fly: 1:48.54 200 Back: 1:49.02

The Wisconsin men finished 6th at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships last season.

Based on Stewarts best times, he would have finished 20th in the 1650 free, and 32nd in both the 500 free and 400 IM.

The distance free skill is apparent. And is a major need for this Wisconsin team.

At Big Tens last season, the Badgers’ top finisher in the 1650 free was then senior Yigit Aslan in 15:00.78. The only other Badger that would have finished ahead of Stewart was Yoav Romano (a current sophomore), who was 16th in 15:11.91. The youthful addition of Stewart helps fortify that need for Wisconsin, in an event that they scored the 3rd fewest points at Big Tens last season.

The 500 free was a better showing for Wisconsin. Aslan finished 8th overall in 4:19.47, and was followed by two other Badgers in the ‘B’ final in Romano (11th, 4:16.06) and current senior Charles Jones (13th, 4:17.21). Stewart is still a little short of reaching that level; his recent success at Winter Juniors shows there is potential to make that leap.

Outside of his distance free skill, there is some question about that 3rd championship event. Hsis 400 IM is a frontrunning contender, considering he would currently rank as the 3rd fastest Badger this season with his current best time.

Stewart joins Benjamin Cescon, Ashton Joswiak, and Joshua Smith in Wisconsin’s 2026 recruiting class.
