The second and final day of action at the 52nd Nico Sapio Trophy unfolded last night in Genoa, with several of Italy’s big guns in the pool as a prelude to this month’s Italian Short Course Championships.
32-year-old Lorenzo Zazzeri raced his way to the top of the podium in the men’s 100m freestyle, posting a solid swim of 46.68 to take the gold.
That defeated the men’s 50m freestyle winner here, Gui Caribe, with the Brazilian national record holder settling for silver in 46.73.
Cristian Tassan-Caser of the host nation rounded out the podium in 47.82.
For Zazzeri, the Italian’s outing was within striking distance of his lifetime best of 46.19, a time he established while finishing in 6th place at the 2021 European Short Course Championships.
Swiss Olympic medalist Noe Ponti earned another piece of hardware, reaping the top spot in the men’s 50m fly, leading a trio of men who cleared the 23-second barrier.
Ponti stopped the clock at 22.21, with Simone Stefani a hair behind at 22.25 as the runner-up.
Caribe dove in for his second event, hitting 22.93 to capture bronze.
Both Stefani and Caribe already rank among the top 25 in the world this season, with the former sitting 17th with his previous season-best of 22.27 and the latter’s super quick 21.86 from September ranking him 5th at the moment.
Ten-time Short Course World Championships medalist Alberto Razzetti proved too quick to catch in the men’s 400m IM, hitting a new Nico Sapio Trophy record of 4:02.91 on his way to gold.
He scorched the field, winning by over 8 seconds as he delivered a time just outside the list of his top 10 personal performances. The 27-year-old’s resume boasts a lifetime best of 3:57.01 in this event, a time he posted to reap gold at the 2023 European Short Course Championships.
Veteran Marco Orsi was the top men’s 100m IM performer in a time of 54.03, holding a narrow advantage over Gabriele Brambillaschi and Biagio Aldrighetti, who picked up the minor medals.
The former logged 54.14 to the latter’s 54.18, with the trio well outside the top 25 season rankings.
However, 35-year-old Orsi has told the Italian Swimming Federation that the upcoming Italian Short Course Championships will be his final meet, as he plans to retire after that competition.
Orsi has amassed a remarkable 25 European Short Course Championshps medals, one LC World Championships medal and four SC Worlds medals throughout this career.
On the women’s side, Anita Gastaldi got it done for gold in the 100m fly, turning in a time of 57.66 as the sole competitor to clear the 58-second barrier.
Sofia Sartori was next to the wall in 58.10, with Costanza Cocconcelli also landing on the podium, good enough for bronze.
Gastaldi’s performance was less than half a second outside her career-swiftest outing of 57.20 from last year, which is a good sign with the national championshps on the horizon.
The women’s 200m back saw Elisa Maloni scorch a monster PB of 2:05.69 en route to beating her peers by over three seconds.
Entering this competition, 27-year-old Maloni’s quickest effort rested at the 2:07.60 notched at the 2024 edition of this trophy. She’s now Italy’s 4th-fastest performer of all time in this event.
