20th FRENCH ELITE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thursday, October 29th – Sunday, November 1st Angers, France SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap Live Results

The penultimate night of action at the 2026 French Elite Short Course Championships brought about a new national record at the hands of 31-year-old Olympian Beryl Gastaldello.

Racing in the final of the women’s 100m backstroke, Gastaldello ripped a lifetime best of 55.66 to take the gold.

Opening in 26.94 and closing in 28.72, Gastaldello’s effort erased her own former French standard of 56.07 she established at the 2024 edition of this competition. That means the veteran becomes the first-ever French woman to delve under the 56-second barrier in the 1back event.

Gastaldello’s New French Record – 55.66 Gastaldello’s Old French Record – 56.07 26.95 27.27 28.72 28.80

Gastaldello’s performance easily cleared the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 57.52 needed to qualify for next month’s Short Course World Championships.

Joining her in qualification was Pauline Mahieu, the runner-up in the race who posted a time of 56.44, with Jeanne Lechevalier right behind in 56.71.

Gastaldello now ranks 6th in the world at the moment. She’ll be seeking her first 100m back elite international medal. Her resume boasts six SC World Championships medals, with her individual prizes coming in the 100m IM (silver in 2021, silver in 2022, bronze in 2024), the 100m free (silver in 2024) and 50m fly (silver in 2024).

But the 100m back wasn’t the only podium Gastaldello secured on the evening. She also took on the 50m freestyle, where she defeated the field in a solid outing of 23.71.

That got the edge over Analia Pigree, who settled for silver in 23.99, with Marie Wattel rounding out the top three in 24.18.

The trio each got under the 24.33 ‘A’ qualification standard.

Gastaldello’s performance wasn’t terribly off her lifetime best of 23.41, a time she produced en route to capturing silver in the event at the 2025 European Short Course Championships.

25-year-old World Championships medalist Pigree’s time indeed established a new PB, dipping under the 24-second barrier for the first time ever. Entering these championships, her lifetime best sat at the 24.08 notched two years ago.

Additional Notes

Emilien Mattenet got the job done in the men’s 400m IM, clocking a time of 4:05.67 en route to beating his peers by over six seconds. That ripped his former PB of 4:08.06 from 2022 to shreds, rendering him now the 2nd-best French men’s 4IM performer of all time. Only Olympic champion Leon Marchand has been faster, with his record of 3:58.30. Mattent’s effort cleared the QT for SC Worlds. The men’s 50m fly saw Clement Secchi win the gold in a time of 22.17, a new career-swiftest performance by .22. Behind him was Lysander Osman, the men’s 100m backstroke winner here, with the University of Kentucky Wildcat posting 22.29 to beat his former PB by nearly a second. That previous best-ever performance rested at the 23.23 he notched last year. Both made the grade for the SC World Championships. Maxime Grousset bypassed the 50m fly in favor of the men’s 200m free, where he settled for silver in 1:41.70. That fell just shy of winner Roman Fuchs, who doubled up on his 400m free victory with a gold medal-worthy outing of 1:41.47 in this shorter event. As we reported, 17-year-old Sauveur Cristofini scorched a new French National Age Record of 1:41.88 en route to the bronze medal. Fuchs’ time here registered his first-ever swim under 1:42, while Grousset’s time was a hair outside his lifetime best of 1:41.70 from when he placed 6th at the 2022 Short Course World Championships. Additional winners and Short Course World Championships qualifiers include Valentine Leclercq in the 800m free (8:24.87), Carl Aitkaci in the men’s 100m breast (57.28), and Lilou Ressencourt in the women’s 200m fly (2:07.89). We’ll keep an eye on additional qualifications as we enter the final day of the championships.
