Bears See Boost in TV Ratings, Packers vs. Injuries, Ben Johnson Effect, Mahomes Elects Surgery, and Other Wednesday Bullets ...Middle East

I made a deal with my nail tech and her husband that, if the Bears make the playoffs, I’ll color my nails at my next appointment. So … how did you spend your Tuesday night? Also: What color should I get?

If you think you’ve found yourself glued to the TV for Bears games more this season than in previous ones, jsut know you are not alone. Chicago’s football team is among the biggest NFL local ratings gainers. The Bears have seen an increase in local viewership of 12 percent. If you think that’s impressive, the Boston market has seen a 34 percent increase in New England Patriots ball-watchers. You can definitely feel the buzz around Chicago for this Bears team. Imagine what a win against the Packers can do. (Awful Announcing) Speaking of the Packers, I’d love if you joined us at Lottie’s for our Bears-Packers watch party:

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@bn-bears.bsky.social) December 17, 2025 at 8:07 AM It sounds like the Packers will be fighting off the injury bug this week:

Matt LaFleur presser takeaways: • Micah Parsons has NOT had surgery yet. Expecting a newborn. Expects him to be around team.• MarShawn Lloyd’s season is all but over.• Other injuries are day to day.• Josh Jacobs would NOT have practiced today.• Impressed with Golden.

LaFleur said all the non-Parsons guys will be fighting to play Saturday night against the Bears.

— Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) December 16, 2025 This is going to be a big week for Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley. Not only does have have to ame plan for Caleb Williams coming off his most complete showing as Chicago’s QB1, but he might be doing so while auditioning for a head coaching job elsewhere. Hafley’s name pops up on a reported list of New York Giants head-coaching candidates shared by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. That list evidently also includes Indianapolis Colts Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo, Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Seattle Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak, and Notre Dame Head Coach Marcus Freeman.

Si.com’s Connor Orr has an exhaustive list of coaching candidates who figure to garner interviews this offseason. It includes a pair of names Bears fans should know (or get to know) — Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle and Offensive Pass-Game Coordinator Press Taylor. There are also a handful of names on the list who happened to interview for the Bears’ head-coaching vacancy last offseason. You should be thankful the Bears landed their guy in Ben Johnson last year because there doesn’t seem to be a Ben Johnson-type in this year’s crop of candidates. Bears head coach Ben Johnson walks along the sideline at Soldier Field. | David Banks-Imagn Images The Ben Johnson Effect could lead to his assistants getting bigger jobs. But right now, it’s all about the numbers his offense is putting up against opponents:

— Patrick K. Flowers (@PatrickKFlowers) December 16, 2025 After briefly exploring his options, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahones elected surgery to repair his injured knee. ESPN’s Nate Taylor reports Mahomes had surgery to repair the tear in his left ACL and a torn LCL. This tends to require a nine-month recovery period, which puts the three-time Super Bowl champion’s availability for the 2026 season opener in jeopardy. The Bears won’t see the Chiefs on their 2026 schedule, but the team is slated to host them in 2027 when the NFC North teams are set to host squads from the AFC West. Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel says “everything is on the table” when it comes to the quarterback position. Which means, yes, Miami could bench Tua Tagovailoa. Remember when the Dolphins (and some of the reporters covering the team) were whining about the tough nature of practicing against the Bears? That probably should have been viewed as a canary in the coal mine. It has been all downhill from there for the Dolphins. (CBS Sports) I love reading about ex-NFL players going back to their high school alma maters and giving back in a big way. The latest example comes from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, who shares that Carson Palmer led his former high school to a California state championship in his first year coaching. Palmer is one of the most decorated football players of his era. He won a Heisman Trophy, was an EA Sports cover athlete, and was a No. 1 overall pick, and had a wonderful 15-year career playing with the Bengals, Raiders, and Cardinals. I wonder where his coaching journey will take him.
