This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Freddie Kiger.
Kiger is a history teacher, statistician, East Chapel Hill Rotary member who was just honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He had a constant passion for teaching his students and making history come alive for them. On top of that, he was also an assistant basketball coach. He’s worked with UNC to lead field study programs at Civil War battlefields, produced podcasts on the Civil War, and has won 3 Emmy awards for ESPN’s SportsCentury series. He works as a statistician at the Smith Center in a sweater vest he first wore so his mom could see him on TV, a sweater vest he still wears in her honor. Not only was Kiger dedicated to his students, he has been dedicated to his community.
