With just three games left, the Bears are on the cusp of making the playoffs for the first time since 2020. What needs to happen for them to clinch a playoff spot as soon as this week? Well, it is actually quite simple:

With a 10-4 record going into Week 16, the Bears currently sit with the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff picture and control their own destiny as of this time. As far as I’m concerned, that means the focus should continue to be on winning whatever the next game is that happens to be on the schedule. This week, it means that beating the Green Bay Packers is the next step for this team as it attempts to complete its march toward the playoffs. Unfortunately, a win alone won’t lock them into a playoff spot. However, it’s not as if the team needs a bunch of crazy scenarios to play out to enter the dance.

A Bears win on Saturday against the Packers and a Pittsburgh Steelers win against the Detroit Lions on Sunday would punch Chicago’s ticket into the playoffs. I hate the idea that I have to root for Aaron Rodgers in order for the Bears to snag a playoff spot by the time this week comes to an end. But this is one of those “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” scenarios that tends to play out this time of year when your favorite team is legitimately in the hunt for a postseason berth.
With that being said, it’s all eyes on the Packers. Nothing else matters to me if the Bears don’t win this week. It isn’t even about revenge against Green Bay going into this one. OK, maybe a little bit. Even still … it isn’t even the primary focus that the Packers are coming to town. It is all about what needs to be done this week to qualify for the playoffs. Beating the Browns was the immediate task to take care of last week. This week, it is the Packers who are standing in the way of the Bears accomplishing their main objective.

I can’t stop thinking about what it would mean to make the playoffs in Year 1 of the Ben Johnson era. Don’t get me wrong. Getting to 10 wins is a significant accomplishment. I don’t care about who they’ve played, what players on other teams are missing, or any other mind-numbing narrative that gets cooked up to diminish what this team hasdone to this point. This is a big deal and we should discuss it as such. But it isn’t the biggest deal. The goal for this team wasn’t to win 10 games this season. However, there is no denying it makes for a nice building block for the years to come.
In the end, the Bears have one goal: Go 1-0 every week, then let the chips fall where they may. Get a win on Saturday, then worry about how you’ll warp your brain to the point where you’re OK rooting for Aaron Rodgers (if only for one week).
