The bad news is that the Chicago Bears have lost a solid special teams contributor in a waiver claim by the Baltimore Ravens. But I suppose the good news here is that it opens up a roster spot (and some flexibility) for the powers that be at Halas Hall. It’s a good news-bad news situation that might be small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but is still worth keeping tabs on at this point of the season.

Carl Jones Jr. will not be re-signing to the practice squad. The #Ravens claimed him on waivers. Jones was third on the #Bears in special teams tackles. The team got some healthy LBs and used Jones’ spot for OL Jordan McFadden on the 53-man roster.

It is fun to look back on that post and see that Theo Benedet has gone from having a UDFA signing blurb to someone who was starting meaningful games (and playing well) as a second-year player. How can you not love stories like that one?

The Bears put Carl Jones Jr. on waivers on Saturday as part of a wave of roster moves ahead of the team’s Week 14 showdown against the Green Bay Packers. We’ve seen Chicago’s football team slide guys off waivers and onto the practice squad over the years. But once in a while, another team’s front office will yoink a guy off the waiver wire and add them to their squad. That it is the Baltimore Ravens doing it makes me raise an eyebrow. Few teams evaluate special teams players as well as Baltimore, so losing Jones on a waiver claim gives me pause.
BEARS 24-HOUR RULE: Ben Johnson Has Me Believing
As Biggs points out above, Carl Jones Jr. was a notable member of the Bears’ special teams unit. Picking up the third-most special teams tackles is nothing to sneeze at — especially when you consider the team’s weaknesses throughout the season in special teams coverage. I hope that Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower has contingency plans with Jones off to Baltimore.

When it comes to what the Bears will do with that roster spot, your guess is as good as mine. OK, so that probably isn’t an answer you were wanting to read. However, I don’t have a feel for what they will do because they have a variety of options. They could sign someone off of their practice squad or snag someone as a street free agent. Perhaps there is a waiver claim to be made by this front office at some point soon. In any case, we will be watching to see what Chicago’s decision-makers do with this newfound roster spot.
