Despite the (now former) Asian Games record holder Kim Woomin out of the event due to a shoulder injury, Zhang used the opening to deliver a major performance, and a major performance he did.
Zhang blasted a new Asian Games record swim of 7:42.49, nearly three seconds faster than Woomin’s 2023 gold-medal time.
This swim marked his 5th gold medal of the week, though it was still well off China’s national record of 7:32.12, set by Zhang Lin in 2009, which also stands as the continental record.

At the end of that race, you can see Zhang immediately go onto his back and begin cooling down, as his number was going to be called upon in the very next event, where he would swim a pivotal 3rd leg of the 4×100 free relay for China.
About 20 minutes after touching the wall in the 800 free, Zhang dove off the blocks for the relay. Zhang dove in and delivered, despite the fatigue he must have been feeling, blasting a 47.65 split before handing off to the fastest 100 freestyler in history, Pan Zhanle (46.75), to help notch a new Asian Record in 3:10.60.
That relay win locked in Zhang’s 6th gold of the Games, the most of any swimmer thus far.
