According to a report from Autosport, instead of an unadulterated retro scream, the FIA and Formula 1 have agreed on a hybrid middle ground: a 3.0-litre V8 paired with a downsized turbocharger, a format that safeguards a semblance of road car relevancy.
While Ben Sulayem’s vision stirred the hearts of motorsport idealists, real-world practicalities have apparently quickly got in the way.
It is said, that releasing full-throttle atmospheric V8s into the urban canyons of Las Vegas, Miami, Singapore, Madrid, Baku, and Melbourne would trigger severe municipal noise violations, putting lucrative street circuit contracts in serious jeopardy.
The forced-induction setup acts as an acoustic compromise, likely offering a meatier, throatier soundtrack than today's muted units without sending city councils into a frenzy.
Lighter, leaner, and push-to-pass
Beyond the acoustic tug-of-war, the new power unit also promises to radically transform how the cars handle on track. F1 is finally tackling its chronic weight problem, aiming to slash a staggering 50kg from the engine package alone.
The heavy, overly complex electrical setups of today are being stripped back, with hybrid output slashed from 350kW down to a modest 100kW helper motor. It is a decisive move away from sci-fi laboratory engineering and back toward the muscular essence of a true racing engine.
The way drivers battle wheel-to-wheel is also slated for a dramatic refresh.F1 won’t bring back DRS but appears to favor an IndyCar-style push-to-pass feature, handing drivers a temporary surge of raw power to execute tactical overtakes.
