2026 ASIAN GAMES
September 20th – September 25th (pool swimming) Prelims at 10am local (9pm previous night ET)/Finals at 5pm local (4am ET) Tokyo Aquatics Centre LCM (50m) Meet Central Entries Live Results Recaps Prelims: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 Finals: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4Japanese 21-year-old Shoon Mitsunaga has taken down his 2nd Asian Games Record in as many days. The latest came in the 50 fly, when he lead the heats of the event in 23.19 on Thursday morning. That just misses his own Japanese Record of 23.06 from March (tied).
That knocks a tenth off the old record of 23.29 that was set by South Korea’s Baek Inchul at the last edition in 2023. Bahraini swimmer Mikhail Arkhangelskiy was also under the old record with a 23.23 to qualify 2nd.
Mitsunaga swam in heat 4 and Arkhangelskiy swam in heat 5, meaning that Arkhangelskiy never held the record.
Arkhangelskiy does, however, still own the Asian Record of 22.91 that he set in June, shortly after becoming eligible to represent his adopted homeland.
Born in St. Petersburg, Arkahangelskiy moved to France with his family as a political refugee in 2009. He now lives and trains in the United States – he swam for Florida State the last two seasons and will transfer to Cal next season.
The two are set up for a big battle in finals, and lurking deeper in the field is Wang Changhao, who set a Chinese Record in this event in June in 23.21. He qualified into the final in 6th place (tied) with a 23.63. Several other swimmers in the final have been 23.2 or 23.3, so the race is far from a runaway for the top qualifiers.
With little pressure to make the 10-swimmer finals in most races, 50 meter stroke swimmers have been the highlights of the prelims sessions so far.
Mitsunaga was 8th at the Pan Pac Championships in August in 23.63.
Of note, Ng Chi Hin set the Macau Record in the 50 fly in 23.63 to qualify for the final 6th (tied). That breaks his own record of 23.94 set in November 2025.
