Alex Siegel from Merrick, New York, has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Virginia beginning in 2028-29. She wrote on social media:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University Of Virginia! I would like to thank my family, coaches and friends for helping me get to this point. A huge thanks to Coach Todd, Coach Gary and the rest of the coaching staff at UVA. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, GO HOOS”
Siegel swims with Long Island Aquatic Club and is one of the best distance swimmers in the country. The longer she swims, the better she is, as evidenced by her 5th-place finish in the 10k race at 2026 USA Swimming Open Water Nationals, which led to an appointment on the 2026-27 U.S. National Team for open water. She also has a 1650 time that would have gotten her an invite to NCAA Division I Championships last year. And for this reason, we ranked her 17th on our Way Too List of top girls’ swimming recruits from the high school class of 2028.
Siegel swam at the 2025 U.S. Open last December, rather than Winter Juniors, and logged PBs in the LCM 200 free (2:02.71) and 400 free (4:13.56). She placed 6th in the 400, 3rd in the 800, and 4th in the 1500. The following week, she competed at the Katie Ledecky Invitational, where she won the 1000 free, finished 3rd in the 200/500 free, and touched 4th in the 400 IM. She clocked lifetime bests in the 50 free (25.34), 200 free (1:49.29), 500 free (4:47.42), 1000 free (9:45.43), and 400 IM (4:21.90).
Three months later, at NCSA Spring Championships, she lowered her 500 free (4:47.04) and 400 IM (4:18.58) times and knocked 6 seconds off her 1650 time, en route to winning the event with 16:15.48.
Siegel is the third top 20-ranked recruit, and the seventh swimmer overall, for the Virginia women’s class of 2032. She will join #5 Karina Plaza, #7 Shelby Hutchinson, “HMs” Lane Francis and Allison Kelly, and “BOTRs” Skylar Zulegar and Zayda Miehl in Charlottesville in 2028. She and Miehl (4:46.2/9:41/16:08) will make a formidable pair.
