The Winter Meetings don’t start until Monday, but things have definitely been heating up this week.
The latest installment is a five-player trade between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox:
Two others moving in the Oviedo-for-Password deal, per sources: left-hander Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman are going to the Red Sox. The Pirates will get one player in addition to Jhostynxon Garcia.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 5, 2025Johan Oviedo, 27, was coming back from surgery last year and had reportedly turned a few heads. He’s controllable for two more years via arbitration, so there were rumors that he was going to be an attractive trade candidate.
In return, as a primary piece of the deal, the Pirates are adding a pretty significant outfield prospect in Jhostynxon Garcia. He’s a top-5 prospect in a good Red Sox system, and a borderline top-100 overall type. Garcia, 22, spent most of last season at Triple-A, and is probably going to be on the big league Pirates very early in the season.
Oviedo had clear value out there, but man, dang. This is a good get for the Pirates, whom we’ve discussed as needing a boost on the offensive side in order to turn the corner as soon as 2026.
Another dang here? This deal saves the Red Sox a whole lot of money if they were going to otherwise spend to add another starting pitcher. Now they could easily repurpose that money on, for example, retaining Alex Bregman.
