For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
McKenna Carroll of San Diego, California, has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at UCLA, starting in the fall of 2026. She trains year-round with Coronado Swim Team Elite and attends Point Loma High School.
Carroll confirmed the decision in an email to SwimSwam, writing:
I’m thrilled to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at UCLA! Thanks to my family, friends, teammates, all of my amazing coaches, and especially my parents for their unwavering support all these years. I am forever grateful. And a special thank you to Coach Jordan and Graham for this amazing opportunity. Go Bruins!
Carroll is a middle-distance freestyle and backstroke specialist, strong in the 100 and 200 of both strokes. She is a two-time CIF San Diego Section Division II Champion and High School All-American in the 200 free, and a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
At the 2025 Section meet, Carroll produced her current best times in the 100 (51.43) and 200 (1:49.38) free, taking second in the shorter race. She went on to swim at State individually for the first time, notching 1:51.25 in the 200 free for 14th place, before touching 26th in the 100 free with a time of 51.83.
A year prior, Carroll clocked 1:52.69 to win the Section title in the 200 and walked away with bronze in the 100 with a time of 53.00. As a freshman in 2023, she was 15th in the 200 free (2:01.80) and 18th in the 500 free (5:33.68).
While she hones in on the freestyle events during the high school season, her backstroke bests were recorded in April and May: 56.91 and 2:01.77. Over the course of the past two years, she’s improved those times from 1:03.29 and 2:20.23.
The self-described late bloomer had a huge long course season this past summer, earning her first Winter Juniors cut in the 100 free (58.04) after dropping two seconds from the 1:00.04 she swam in 2024. She also dropped 4.71 seconds in the 200 free (2:05.19) and 2.87 seconds in the 100 back (1:05.14).
Top SCY Times:
100 Freestyle: 51.43 200 Freestyle: 1:49.38 100 Backstroke: 56.91 200 Backstroke: 2:01.77 The Bruins are led by head coach Jordan Wolfrum, who enters her seventh season at the helm of the program. In their first year in the Big Ten, UCLA took seventh out of 14 teams at the conference championships. The previous season, they had finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championships. They closed their year at NCAAs in Federal Way, Washington, where they placed 37th, scoring seven points behind junior diver Eden Cheng. The conference meet scores ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ finals, and it took times of 49.60 in the 100 free, 1:47.11 in the 200 free, 53.97 in the 100 back, and 1:57.84 in the 200 back to score in 2025. According to the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Carroll would have ranked sixth in the 200 free, eighth in the 200 back, 11th in the 100 back, and 13th in the 100 free. Senior Gizem Guvenc led the way in the 100 and 200 free with marks of 48.45 and 1:45.30, while juniors Fay Lustria (52.01) and Rosie Murphy (1:54.07) topped the backstroke standings. Carroll will join Mia Bugarin, Zoie Fjare, Sora Koike, Alex Fox, Meredith O’Grady, Ava Otteson, and Olivia Sina in UCLA’s class of 2030.If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to Recruits@swimswam.com.
