Egor Kornev has firmly established himself as one of the fastest swimmers on the planet today; in both long-course and short-course speed, the Russian superstar is a must-see spectacle every time he hits the water, even when he is dealing with an injury.
In an interview with Russian news outlet Match TV, he said he has been dealing with a back injury he recently suffered. However, that has clearly not played too much of a role in his swimming, having tied the 100 freestyle world record at the first stop of this World Cup in Baku in 44.84, and delivered another World Record performance in Tashkent in the 50 butterfly in 21.28.
After his 50 free on Thursday in Tashkent, where he finished runner-up to Australia’s Cam McEvoy in 20.61, Kornev told Match TV he’s been dealing with a back injury, though he made sure people knew it wasn’t severe.
“Everything is fine. It’s just that something probably went wrong, even based on how I felt personally. On top of that, I recently suffered a back injury, and it hurts a lot. I hope I’ll be able to deal with it by Friday and somehow acclimate, so to speak. I didn’t swim the way I normally do. But it’s nothing serious; these things happen.” Kornev told Match TV. “I expected to swim faster this time. But I did something wrong and made some serious mistakes. That’s why the result wasn’t particularly good. But it’s nothing serious.”
Kornev has the chance to earn two triple crowns in Astana, Kazakhstan, after winning the 100 free and 50 fly at the first two stops in Baku and Tashkent, respectively.
In addition to those two potential payday events, Kornev is also set to race the 50 free and 50 back in Astana.
