Boy charged in attack on staff members at Switzer Learning Center in Torrance ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

A boy is facing attempted murder charges for allegedly stabbing three staff members at Torrance’s Switzer Learning Center earlier this week, Torrance police said.

The ex-student allegedly walked onto campus Monday, Oct. 13, attacked three staff members, attempted to attack a fourth and then fled, police said.

He also made a bomb threat, leading to the discovery of two “incendiary devices” near 208th Street and Amapola Avenue, which were made safe by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad, police said.

The former student was arrested the same day and has remained in custody, police said.

The boy’s name and age were withheld by police because he is a minor.

The exact number of charges, and whether the suspect faces other charges aside from attempted murder, were unclear.

Two of the victims were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and the third was treated at the scene.

The attack occurred about 8:15 a.m., police said. Around noon, a loud explosion was heard near campus, but Torrance police would only say the devices were declared safe and did not say if the explosion was from the bomb squad detonating a suspected device.

Authorities had also not disclosed how the boy got on campus, what type of weapon was used, the extent of the injuries to the victims or commented on his status as an ex-student.

The Switzer Learning Center was established in Torrance in 1972 by Janet Switzer, an educator focused on children with learning disabilities.

It was unclear how many students and staff members were on campus when the attack took place.
