Ranji Trophy preview: Focus on fringe players and big guns ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

Perhaps even more important that the West Indies Test series, is the upcoming Ranji Trophy season for Team India, that will give a chance for the existing players to get some practice before the South Africa series, groom the fringe players for bigger challenges, and also bring new talents to the fore.

The Ranji season begins on October 15, and comes at a point, when the Test side is going through a major transformation. So, it can’t be stressed upon more, how important a season it is for the players, but the national side too, to get that regular supply of players.

Seniors Must Play, Good Time for Rishabh Pant to Regain Fitness

The national selectors have made it clear that the senior Test members must play domestic cricket, if available. Last year, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma played, and this time Rishabh Pant will be seen turning up for Delhi. He isn’t fit as yet, and not in the squad, but the time is right for him to play at least one match before the SA series; he has been injured since the England series.

Mohammed Shami, after being overlooked for Tests, in fact all formats now, will have a major point to prove. He has already come out in the open and claimed, he is fit, and the time is now, to make heads turn, again.

Opportunity for Fringe Players to Make Mark

Karun Nair is out of the Indian team ever since his horror show in England. But it wouldn’t be the end immediately. He averaged over 50 in last year’s Ranji, and perhaps could make a mark again. Again Shardul Thakur is another such player who keeps getting in and out of the team. As Mumbai skipper now, he would have added responsibility, and perhaps a keener eyes by the selectors. Some meaty performances here, and he could again be in the loop for SA series.

He averaged 42 with the bat last year and picked up 35 wickets with the ball. At almost 34, this could be his very last chance to comeback. Then, not to forget Sarfaraz Khan, who is now a domestic giant. For reasons unknown, he just has been out since the AUS tour; Averages 66 and a solid showing here could change the selectors’ heart.

A surprise entry here is that of Ishan Kishan. He is the captain of Jharkhand, and his short County stint, then inclusion in the Irani Trophy shows, he is under some of Test consideration. But for that, he’ll have to better his career avg of 38.

Performance Just to Stay in the Loop

There would be some players, who by the looks of it, won’t play Tests in the near future, but then just to be under India consideration, will have to churn performances. Bengal opener.. you have to feel for Abhimanyu Easwaran. He has travelled with the Indian team as a reserve opener for some time now, but hasn’t made his debut as yet. He’s 30, time is certainly running out, but a bad season could take him out of consideration.

Tanush Kotian is another such player, who would have to be excellent, just to be in the loop. HE averages 45 lower down the order, and has picked up 114 wickets, so more than a utility player. But then, it seems there is no space for a spinner in the side. But one never knows, and Gautam Gambhir’s fondness for all-rounders is well-known. So, a good season, and a Test debut could be around the corner.

Anshul Kamboj is a Test player, but an injury meant he couldn’t come up with desired results. Now, to just get that faith back in the selectors, he would have to come up with something special. Last year, he got 35 wickets in 6 matches, at a strike-rate of 29. So, the quality is there.

India Could Find Their No. 3

Tried once, but Rajat Patidar just couldn’t do justice to his talent. Now, he is the best captain domestically, led the Vidarbha side in Irani, and scored over 500 runs at an average close to 50. Bats in the middle-order and was excellent in the Duleep Trophy too. So, a lot if on his plate. If not No.3, then he could be in consideration for other slot.

Dhruv Jurel is one regular player in the Indian Test side. Yes, the opportunities are far and few, maybe in absence of Pant, but then, he can certainly emerge as a strong No. 3 contender. His FC average is at 51, while he recently scored his maiden Test ton vs the WI. So, a definite chance there.
