Sarah Sjostrom (23.86) is seeking her 100th international medal and her 19th European Championships gold medal, and this event is her opportunity to claim it. She is the only European woman under 24 seconds this morning and is the European record holder in 23.61, although is less than a quarter of a second ahead of joint #2 seeds Sara Curtis (24.09) and Marrit Steenbergen (24.09).
Curtis is coming off a world record in the 50 back last night, while Steenbergen won 200 free silver and has a tough-looking double this morning with the 100 back to follow this event, with only the men’s 50 breast in between. She has not scratched any individual events so far this week though.
Kasi Wasick (24.19) is the defending champion and the #4 seed, while 100 free silver medalist Milou van Wijk is entered fifth-fastest in 24.23. Belgian record holder Florine Gaspard (24.45) is just ahead of France’s Beryl Gastaldello, who, like Steenbergen, is entered in the 100 back this morning.
Theodora Taylor (24.59) finished 4th at the Commonwealth Games but won the European Junior title last month. Tessa Giele (24.73) set a big PB in the 50 back in last night’s final and could drop time here too.
Men’s 50 Breaststroke
We saw some fantastic racing in both the men’s 100 breast and 200 breast, but the 50 might be the pick of the bunch. Reigning world champion Simone Cerasuolo (26.42) is only the #2 seed, with his teammate Ludovico Art Viberti (26.27) ahead of him.
Ivan Kozhakin (26.42) is the #3 seed after winning silver in the 100 breast, with his teammate and World Championships silver medalist Kirill Prigoda (26.62) seeded 5th. Melvin Imoudu (26.57) set a new German record earlier this season, while Adam Ramsay-Peaty (26.64) is the world record holder and can never be fully discounted.
Luka Mladenovic (26.72) is coming off a surprise bronze medal in the 200 breast last night, and now has three European medals this season after picking up a brace at the short course championships in December. Nicolo Martinenghi (26.78), the 100 breast champion here, is only the third-fastest Italian entered and is at risk of missing out on progressing.
Women’s 100 Backstroke
Mary-Ambre Moluh, who swam faster than the European record on the mixed medley relay three days ago with a 57.99 leadoff, is the top seed here in 58.25. Marrit Steenbergen (58.33), who won the 100 free and won silver in the 200 free last night, is the #2 seed just behind.
Lauren Cox (59.45) is the #5 seed after matching her British record in the 50 back last night to win bronze, with her teammate and 200 back champion Katie Shanahan (1:00.57) swimming in the final heat.
Alina Gaifutdinova (59.51), who became the #3 swimmer in history in the 50 back in the semi-finals with a 26.91, but then missed the medals in last night’s final, swims next to 200 back bronze medalist Pauline Mahieu (59.13) in the first of the circle-seeded heats. With Beryl Gastaldello (59.70) in the final heat next to Moluh, Mahieu will need to put down a big performance to make sure she is one of the fastest two of that trio.
Maaike de Waard (59.40) led off the mixed medley relay for the Netherlands in 59.89 and is the #4 seed here, with 200 back silver medalist Camila Rodrigues Rebelo (1:00.34) in the second of the circle-seeded heats.
Men’s 200 Butterfly
Leon Marchand (1:52.57) will dive in for his first individual swim of the meet, having only featured on France’s silver medal-winning 4×200 free relay so far this week. With his 1:43.76 leadoff in that race ranking him 6th in history in the 200 free, he is clearly in good form.
Poland’s Chmielewski twins Krzysztof (1:52.64) and Michal (1:54.68) are two of the top seeds, with the former being the reigning World Championships silver medalist. Italian pair Alberto Razzetti (1:54.47) and Federico Burdisso (1:54.76) are also seeded under 1:55, with Great Britain’s 100 fly finalist Ed Mildred just outside in 1:55.03.
Apostolos Siskos (1:56.13) won silver in the 200 back and is seeded 13th here, two spots behind Hungary’s Hubert Kos (1:56.01). We will have to wait and see if he turns up for this race, as the final of this event comes tomorrow evening when he will likely have the 100 back and 200 IM semi-finals.
Women’s 200 IM
Abbie Wood (2:08.17) is the top seed by a second and a half in this event, but is coming off a disappointing 8th-place finish at the Commonwealth Games last month. Anastasia Gorbenko (2:09.68) and Roos Vanotterdijk (2:09.73) are the only other women entered under 2:10, but are in markedly different form – Gorbenko was 7th in the 400 IM, while Vanotterdijk set a Belgian record to take silver in the 50 fly and matched the Championship record in the 100 fly.
Theodora Taylor (2:10.32), the 400 IM silver medalist, won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in a new European Junior record of 2:09.61, and Ellen Walshe (2:10.49) is the #5 seed after winning gold in the 400 IM.
European junior champion Barbara Lesniewska (2:12.45) is in the field at the senior championships here, as is last year’s European Junior Championships silver medalist Noelle Benkler (2:12.19).
Lea Polonsky (2:11.85) won silver two years ago, while Justina Kozan (2:14.24) will be one to keep an eye on in lane 7 of the second heat after winning 400 IM bronze.
Mixed 4×100 Freestyle Relay
There are just 14 teams entered here, but most of the big names are competing. Great Britain finished 5th in both the men’s and women’s races, while the Netherlands could be a title contender tonight given that they went 1-2 in the individual event.
France will be in the first heat and should progress comfortably, although they may have to use Maxime Grousset to do so. Italy will be smarting after missing the men’s 4×100 free final yesterday, so watch for a revenge swim from them this morning in heat 2.
Men’s 1500 Freestyle
There are three German swimmers seeded in the top three of this event, just as there were in the 800 free, and it is the same three names: Sven Schwarz (14:35.69), Oliver Klemet (14:39.03), and Johannes Liebmann (14:39.67). The order is a little different though, with Schwarz top and 800 free champ Liebmann third, but he will have the benefit of swimming in the second of the circle-seeded heats again.
Zalan Sarkany, who won bronze after hacking six seconds off his best in the 800 free, is the #5 seed in 14:47.89 while his teammate David Betlehem is seeded at #6 in 14:48.73. Ireland’s Dan Wiffen, who won Olympic bronze in this event two years ago, is seeded 4th with the 14:44.70 he swam to win Commonwealth silver last month.
Sacha Velly (14:51.23) will have the home crowd’s attention in the final heat, with just eight men seeded under 15 minutes here. Italy’s Matteo Diodati (14:53.73) is the final one of those swimmers.
