See Friday morning’s mini start list here.Curzan was entered in seven events individually coming into the four-day meet, so had some choices to make. On Friday, the decision was down to the 200 back (#3 seed) and 100 fly (#5 seed), and she chose the former.
Neither race offered a particularly clean path to the podium. In the 200 back, she ranks behind American teammates Regan Smith and Phoebe Bacon, with only two able to advance to the A-Final. In the 100 fly, she ranked behind American teammates Torri Huske and the World Record holder and favorite by a large margin Torri Huske.
That 100 fly is without two big American names: Regan Smith and Kate Douglass. Neither was entered in the event pre-meet, but in a normal trials year, either would be a possible entry for Team USA.
Douglass, in fact, will have no individual events on Friday after paring back her potentially monstrous schedule for the abbreviated championship.
Another big scratch comes from Katie Grimes in the 400 free. She finished 6th in the 400 IM on Thursday, the event where she was actually chosen to the roster. She has no races on Friday.
The same is true for Alex Walsh, who swam a personal best in the 400 IM on Thursday for 5th but has dropped her races for Friday. She had entries in the 100 fly and 50 breast on Friday, but won’t swim either.
Among the significant non-scratches is the women’s 200 backstroke, where Rylee Erisman and Anna Peplowski have both held on to their entries. Both swimmers are better known for other races, but are taking advantage of the opportunity to test their versatility on Friday.
Races to Watch
…Could a big upset be brewing in the women’s 400 free? Summer McIntosh is the World Record holder, Katie Ledecky is an Olympic Champion in this event, but Australia’s Lani Pallister is the member of the trio who is having the best meet by their personal standard. She was 4th at Worlds last year, only four-tenths behind Ledecky and about 2.6 seconds behind McIntosh. But Pallister was three seconds better than her Worlds time from last year in the 1500, so if she can find the speed to go with it, the potential is there…
…The women’s 100 fly will feature the World Record holder Gretchen Walsh, who has distanced herself from the field so far in the 100 fly that her 54.99 split in the 100 fly in the 400 medley relay earlier in the meet left some…disappointed? As she put in a TikTok afterward: “When I brainwashed everyone to believe that 54.99 for a 100 butterfly relay split was mediocre”…
