Gerwyn Price was left frustrated by the partisan English crowd after missing three match darts in an epic defeat to Luke Littler.
Littler overcame Price 3-2 in the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix, but it was an error strewn performance from the teen world champion in Leicester.
Littler had a tough start but staged an epic comeback against PriceGettyThe 18-year-old went two sets down in the five set face-off, and although he won the next set in straight legs, Price missed three match darts that would’ve sent Littler packing in the fourth.
The Welshman declined to broadcaster Sky Sports post-defeat, and then took to Instagram to give his take on what went wrong.
“Wow, gutted!” he wrote to his 364,000 followers. “This is why we need to play majors in neutral venues/countries.
“Luke was great in patches at the right time in the end, but I lost that one again.”
Cardiff native Price felt the Leicester crowd was against him, and it’s not the first time he’s discussed the issue.
In 2023 he said of neutral venues: “I think it’s only right. That’s what happens with other sports.
“You should have equal rights that the tournament goes to different parts of the world. And then I think I’ll have a bit of a better chance of winning!
“Germany is becoming a huge market for the PDC and darts is growing immensely all over Europe. Maybe move it to Germany, Holland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Belgium.
“I don’t see any reason why they can’t do it. I know they have the history with Ally Pally, but times move on, things change. It used to be at the Circus Tavern years ago and they moved on from that.
“With the way the game is going, and the strength-in-depth in every country, in all corners of the world, the tournament needs to have a new home now and again.
Price thought he was on course for an epic win, but appeared to blame the partisan crowd for Littler’s comebackGetty“Maybe you could have it two years in London, two years in Holland, two years in Germany, then two years in Wales.”
Price, a former professional rugby player, has shown that hostile crowds can get to him in the past.
In 2021 he even resulted to wearing industrial ear defenders at Alexandra Palace to block out the noise, a tactic that was banned the following year.
What did Littler say after beating Price?
Littler, on his part, attempted to keep things classy following the win, writing on his socials: “Wow what a game that was fought hard from 2-0 down.
“Fair play to Gerwyn Price, definitely made me dig deep there, we focus on tomorrow against Jonny.”
Littler will likely again have the crowd on his side against Jonny Clayton, another Welshman, who even received a warning from his countryman Price.
Price backs himself against anyone on the tour, but Clayton isn’t buying itGettyAre darts stars scared of Luke Littler?
Price claimed he’s the only man on the tour who isn’t ‘scared’ of Littler, but Clayton thinks everyone is.
“The honest answer is you have to be scared of him, the two Lukes really [referring to World No.1 Luke Humphries],” he said in response.
“Them two are pushing bars that we’re all following. Gerwyn is putting in some phenomenal performances and we all try to follow the two Lukes.
“The sad thing is I have to play one of those two, but I’m in the semis.
“Whoever I got, I’ve done my job, I’m in the semis, I’m there, whoever it is it will be bloody tough.”
