Ben Johnson on Getting Caleb Williams 4,000 Passing Yards: It’s a Tertiary Goal ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is on the cusp of rewriting the franchise’s record books.

But when asked about it on Wednesday, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson provided an answer that made my ears perk up:

“If it were to happen, that would be great. But he would agree with me when I say that our number one objective is to win this ball game. And so, whatever that takes that’s our goal. We’ll see where it’s at at the end of the year. But that’s a tertiary goal.”

That is such a coach-y answer from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. But allow me to get granular for a moment. Johnson didn’t dismiss it off hand. He did not claim that it wasn’t on his mind. And he didn’t say it was a non-factor. What the first-year head coach did say that it was a tertiary goal.

CALEB WILLIAMS HAS BEEN UNIQUELY UNLUCKY (AND IT’S BARELY SLOWED HIM DOWN)

For those of you who do not have a dictionary on hand, the word tertiary refers to something that is third in the order of operations. In other words, winning the game and locking in the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs would count as the main goals here for obvious reasons. However, getting Chicago’s QB1 that mythical 4,000-yard passing mark remains a goal — albeit not one that has top priority.

All Caleb Williams needs is 270 passing yards to make it happen. For what it’s worth, Williams has thrown for 270+ yards four times this season — including in his most recent game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football. The Bears are 2-2 in games in which Williams throws for 270+ yards this season. Take that factoid for whatever it is worth to you.

BEN JOHNSON LOOKING BACK ON WEEK 2: “Being in that locker room and how that felt. You don’t always remember what exactly was said or anything like that, but you always remember how you felt in those moments. And I know our players do too. … It’s never a good taste when you get beat like that so handily. Fourth quarter wasn’t even close, so, yeah, we’ll leave it at that.”

ON VETERAN LEADERS HELPING KEEP THINGS AFLOAT: “Usually, hwen you have a young team – a really young team – they tend to ride the wave a little bit more of going up and down. I think we’ve got a really good core of veteran leaders that keep the main thing the main thing in the locker room and make sure everybody is focused on the goal at hand. They’ve made my life a lot easier with this transition. That, along with some veteran coaches, it takes a lot of people to get it done like that.” Ben Johnson watches a play against Lions at Ford Field in Detroit. | © Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images BEN JOHNSON ON THE EVOLUTION OF HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CALEB WILLIAMS: “He’s certainly settled in. Converstions we have now are a little bit more advanced than they were earlier in the season in terms of what we’re trying to get done with some of these ball plays. I think you’ve seen the presnap penalties start to go down. And when you see things over the last half of the season where you’re getting the free plays, you can feel his control at the line of scrimage come out a little bit more. I think he feels very much involved in the process. I think he feels like he’s got a great grasp of what we’re trying to get done. And I think that is showing up now on game day on a consistent basis, and so he is able to play a little bit faster.” BEN JOHNSON ON PREPARING FOR THE LIONS: “They’re going to come out here and they’re going to fight. That’s what they do. It’s going to be a good challenge for us. It’s a very good team. This group has talent all over the place. Offensively, their skill positions are loaded. Receiver-wise, they’re fast. Their quarterback is playing at a super-high level. … These runners are dangerous. Both of them. And so, defensively, we’ve got a tall task at hand.”
