ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A ceremony in Albany honored the life of longtime Rochester firefighter Elvis Reyes three years after his death.
Reyes died in September of 2022 from complications of a surgery to treat injuries he sustained while on duty. He was honored during Tuesday’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony. During the ceremony, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared Oct. 7 as Firefighter Appreciation Day.
During his 20 years with the Rochester Fire Department, Reyes saved two people from a fire in 2009. He also helped to instruct firefighters in the Dominican Republic and got recognition for saving lives as a volunteer during Hurricane Sandy and other disasters. Thousands went to his funeral at the Blue Cross Arena and shared memories of his service and kindness.
