Around the NFL: Ravens Bolster Secondary, Chargers, Colts Add on D, Flacco to Cincy, More ...Middle East

We’re still a few weeks away from the NFL trade deadline, but that didn’t stop a few teams from making moves on Tuesday, including the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers, who find themselves reeling in the early portion of the schedule.

Ravens Send Edge Rusher Odafe Oweh to Chargers in Swap for Safety Alohi Gilman

The Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers struck a notable trade on Tuesday, sending edge rusher Odafe Oweh to Los Angeles in exchange for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick, per the Chargers’ announcement. Baltimore will also ship a 2027 seventh-rounder (via the Rams) to complete the deal.

For Baltimore, the trade represents both a financial and roster reset. Oweh, a 2021 first-round pick, was coming off a 10-sack season but hadn’t found his rhythm this year — recording zero sacks in five games and playing just 45 percent of defensive snaps, a dip of 11 percent from 2024. Despite the Ravens picking up his $13 million fifth-year option, contract extension talks never gained traction, and the team now saves nearly $8 million in cap space.

Oweh’s departure does, however, leave the Ravens even thinner at edge rusher. The team ranks second-to-last in the NFL with just six sacks, and its remaining group — Kyle Van Noy, Tavius Robinson, Mike Green, and David Ojabo — has combined for only three.

On the other side, the Chargers are trying to stay afloat defensively amid injuries to key players. With Khalil Mack still on injured reserve due to an elbow injury suffered in Week 2, Los Angeles needed an infusion of pass-rush talent.

Oweh’s athleticism and familiarity with defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s system — a derivative of the Ravens’ defensive scheme — should help smooth the transition. Minter and Ravens DC Zach Orr both coached together in Baltimore from 2017–20, meaning Oweh will step into a playbook he already knows.

Meanwhile, Baltimore bolstered its secondary depth by adding Alohi Gilman, joining Tuesday’s practice-squad signing of veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson. With Marlon Humphrey (calf) sidelined through at least Week 7 and Kyle Hamilton still uncertain after missing Sunday’s blowout loss to Houston, the Ravens suddenly have more flexibility on the back end. If Hamilton returns soon, he could slide closer to the box — potentially boosting Baltimore’s struggling pass rush and run defense in the process.

Bengals Trade for Veteran QB Joe Flacco

While the two brother Harbaugh head coaches made a swap on Tuesday, so did a pair of AFC North rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns.

The Browns sent veteran—and recently benched—quarterback Joe Flacco to the Bengals and a sixth-round pick, in exchange for a fifth-round pick from Cincinnati. Flacco will now suit up for his third AFC North team, with the Steelers being the only team he hasn’t played for in the division.

Since Joe Burrow hit the IR, Jake Browning has been bad, and the Bengals have been skidding, losing all three games that Browning started after starting 2-0. The Bengals will lean on the veteran Flacco to keep their season alive long enough for a potential Burrow return in December.

Colts Sign Veteran Linebacker Germaine Pratt

The Indianapolis Colts are bringing in a familiar face for their new defensive coordinator. Veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt has agreed to a one-year deal with the team, according to the team.

Pratt, 29, was recently released by the Las Vegas Raiders after starting the first four games of the season, during which he totaled 25 tackles, two passes defensed, and one tackle for loss. His release came just before the Raiders’ Week 5 matchup in Indianapolis, and now he’ll remain in town — this time as a member of the opposing sideline.

The move reunites Pratt with Lou Anarumo, his former defensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals, who now holds the same position with the Colts. Pratt thrived under Anarumo’s system in Cincinnati, starting 88 games and appearing in 96 total from 2019 to 2024. During that span, he racked up 616 tackles, seven interceptions, seven forced fumbles, 16 pass breakups, and 32 tackles for loss — all while establishing himself as a dependable presence in both run defense and coverage.

A third-round pick (No. 72 overall) out of NC State in 2019, Pratt became a key piece of Cincinnati’s rise to contention under Anarumo, starting seven playoff games and recording 49 tackles, one interception, and three pass breakups in the postseason.

Last season, Pratt set a career high with 143 tackles, marking his third straight year with at least 99 tackles, two interceptions, and five tackles for loss — production that underscored his consistency and range.

“We’re excited about him, excited about his talents,” said head coach Shane Steichen following the signing.

It marked the most sacks by any player in Week 5, and Bonitto now leads the NFL with seven sacks through the first five weeks of the season. Dike returned four kickoffs for 136 yards, including a 65-yard return in the second quarter, and three punts for 33 yards in Tennessee’s 22-21 comeback victory over Arizona. His 34.0 kick-return average and 11.0 punt-return average were the highest in the NFL in Week 5 (minimum three returns), while his 65-yard return was also the longest in the league last week. Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, New Orleans Saints cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, and San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Piñeiro are the NFC Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 5. McKinstry recorded three passes defensed and two fourth-quarter interceptions in the Saints’ 26-14 comeback victory over the Giants. He was the only NFC player to record multiple interceptions in Week 5. Piñeiro converted all four field goal attempts – from 20, 37, 41, and 59 yards – and his point-after attempts in San Francisco’s 26-23 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football. His 41-yarder put the 49ers ahead in overtime.
