As Formula 1 slips into its summer break, Mercedes find themselves in the position every team craves: leading both world championships. Yet behind the silver smiles, the mood at Brackley is not one of celebration but of vigilance.
The numbers are impressive. The W17 has delivered eight victories from 11 races, placing Mercedes 72 points clear of Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, while rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli holds a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ standings.
But deputy team principal Bradley Lord is warning that the most dangerous phase of the season is only just beginning.
“We've had an outstanding first half of the season with eight wins from 11 races,” Lord said on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show.
“There have been setbacks and there have been difficult moments, but that's the nature of Formula 1. It's an incredibly demanding sport.”
Mercedes know that better than most. Reliability gremlins have struck both Antonelli and George Russell, while Ferrari, McLaren and even Red Bull have shown flashes of pace capable of unsettling the championship leaders.
“The opportunity to be part of a team that's fighting for the World Championships is exactly why everyone in this organization came into the sport in the first place,” Lord continued.
“To be in a position where we're leading both championships and have the chance to convert that into success at the end of the year is a privilege. It's a challenge that everyone in the team is excited to take on.”
The pressure is about to intensify
For Lord, the break is less a moment of rest than the calm before a storm.
“I think the important point is doing all of that in a calm way,” he insisted.
“We're approaching the summer break, and, while we're only halfway through the season, in many ways the hard part begins afterwards.”
“That's when the pressure starts to build. The races begin to count down, the flyaway sequence becomes more intense, and the team spends longer periods away from the factory.”

“At the same time, you're continuing to develop the car and introduce upgrades while operating on the other side of the world. That inevitably increases the complexity.”
The warning is clear: championships are often lost not through lack of speed, but through errors made under mounting pressure.
Calm over chaos
Lord believes Mercedes’ response must be measured rather than frantic.
“Success in that environment comes from remaining calm and disciplined. It's not about moving at a frantic pace. It's about making sure every decision is measured and every step forward is properly planned.”
He revealed that the team is already deep into those discussions.
“Those are exactly the conversations happening right now.
“We're looking carefully at the upgrades that are progressing through the factory, evaluating the opportunities available on both the power unit and chassis side, and making sure we introduce performance at the right time without overreaching.”
It is a message of caution from a team sitting on top of Formula 1. Mercedes may hold the lead, but Lord’s words suggest the squad is acutely aware that the final 11 races will test not only the speed of the W17, but the composure of everyone behind it.
