Mijatovic threw down a time of 3:43.45 to clinch the national title in the event, setting a new 17-18 National Age Group record and becoming the 5th-fastest performer in U.S. history in the event.
The 17-year-old, who swims for the Pleasanton Seahawks, now sits just behind Olympic gold medalist Conor Dwyer (3:43.42) on the all-time top performers list.

He blew past that record time, knocking almost two seconds off his former lifetime best (3:45.20) en route to winning the title.
Mijatovic’s swim also launched him up the world rankings in the 400 free; his winning performance in Irvine tonight ranks him 5th in the world so far this season, bumping Ryan Erisman out of the #5 spot.

Mijatovic was still sitting in 2nd-place at the 300-meter mark, flipping about .75 behind Erisman, before turning up the heat on the final stretch to come home in 56.08 and overtake Erisman on the last 50.
Earlier in the meet, Mijatovic won the 18 & under final of the 200 free (1:46.04) and took 3rd in the 1500 free (15:08.12).
