Two separate rescues — including one involving a 9-year-old girl — unfolded less than two hours apart Sunday along the Sonoma County coast, officials said Monday.

The Sonoma County Fire District urged beachgoers to “always use caution at the beach and never turn your back to the ocean.”
The first rescue took place around 12:45 p.m. at Wrights Beach, just south of Jenner, when a middle-aged man suffered a leg injury after being hit by a wave, according to the district. He was airlifted from the sand to an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
About two hours later, firefighters were called to Schoolhouse Beach, 2.5 miles south of Wrights Beach, after a wave swept a young girl into the water. Her mother followed her in, but bystanders helped pull both to shore. Firefighters and paramedics evaluated them at the scene before transporting them to a hospital.
“They are very fortunate and we are relieved this incident did not have a more serious outcome,” fire officials said.
