When the Alabama Crimson Tide dropped their season-opener in shocking fashion to the Florida State Seminoles, it seemed as though the Noles had put themselves on the map as national title contenders with the huge victory.
For the Tide, the loss was obviously a tough pill to swallow, but it was, by all accounts, a quality loss in Week 1 against a very good opponent —the kind of loss that could end up looking very favorable on their resume down the line.
Following FSU’s shocking loss to an unranked Virginia Cavaliers team on Friday night, however, this narrative appears to be shifting in a significant way, according to ESPN analyst and College GameDay host Desmond Howard.
“I’ll tell you, Alabama-Georgia, we knew that was going to be a big game coming to the weekend,” Howard said on College GameDay, via AL.com. “But then after last night with Florida State losing to Virginia, there’s a lot of pressure now on Alabama. Why? Because Florida State beat Alabama and now Florida State just lost to UVA. That’s going to be a bad loss on Alabama’s record. We thought it would be a quality loss, but now with them losing to Virginia [it might not be].”
Howard could be onto something, but it’s still way too early to tell how that Week 1 loss to the Noles will end up looking come December. There’s still a lot of ball left to be played, and Florida State is unlikely just to roll over.
Should the Noles continue to struggle in ACC play, though, then Howard’s assessment could end up looking prophetic come Selection Sunday.
