CUBS LINEUP — And there he is. Having missed every game since September 2, and with just three games to go until the playoffs begin, Kyle Tucker is back in the Cubs starting lineup this afternoon against the Cardinals. Let’s all hope – desperately – that he looks like his usual self, because he is taking the spot of an otherwise productive member of this offense.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Kyle Tucker, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Reese McGuire, C Matt Shaw, 3BThere he is: Kyle Tucker is batting cleanup and playing DH, pushing Moises Ballesteros to the bench and keeping Seiya Suzuki out in right field. Again, I really hope he looks good, because Ballesteros had been hitting.
The other shame of this entire saga is that Seiya Suzuki is not as good of a right fielder as Kyle Tucker, but seeing as Tucker’s injury was leg related (calf), I don’t even know how capable he is of playing the outfield. Maybe he’ll get there by Sunday to give us some extra data before the playoffs begin.
Besides that, the rest of the Cubs lineup is pretty normal, with Michael Busch leading off, Ian Happ batting third, and PCA (homer #30 incoming today, I’m calling it) batting sixth.
The one sorta-change today isn’t a change at all: Reese McGuire is just getting in some work behind the plate, resting Carson Kelly.
St. Louis Cardinals Lineup:
Lars Nootbaar, LF Ivan Herrera, DH Alec Burleson, 1B Nolan Arenado, 3B Nolan Gorman, 2B Thomas Saggese, SS Pedro Pages, C Jordan Walker, RF Victor Scott II, CFPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea isn’t going to pitch himself into the playoff rotation, but his last outing was almost hilariously impressive: 7.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 0BB, 11Ks … and that was against a Reds team still fighting for the playoffs IN CINCINNATI, where the balls love to fly. He’s now up to 26 starts on the season (153.2 IP) before today, with a 4.10 ERA. Just a very, very solid season from a guy whose place on the roster wasn’t exactly clear back in Spring Training.
He’s got one more (regular season) job today, though, as the Cubs still need to lock up that top Wild Card slot.
The good news is that Colin Rea has faced the Cardinals twice already this season, pretty much dominating them both times:
Aug. 9: 6.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 6K July 4: 6.2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 2BB, 4KA little bit more of that would be nice today. GO CUBS.
St. Louis Cardinals: Miles Mikolas, RHP
Miles Mikolas is now at the end of his third straight largely unproductive season for the Cardinals, and unlike when he first started showing cracks, but was still gobbling up innings (exceeding 200 IP twice in a row), Mikolas is up to just 151.1 IP through 30 starts this year. And all that with a 4.76 ERA (5.32xERA).
He’s allowing a ton of homers, tons of barrels, tons of hard contact, and he’s striking almost nobody out.
So give me Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 30th homer today at Wrigley Field. Book it.
