Cooper was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List before the regular season began as the league investigated two off-field arrests involving Cooper and his ex-girlfriend that resulted in five pending criminal charges.
The NFL released a statement on Friday.
“The National Football League today removed Jonathon Cooper of the Denver Broncos from the Commissioner Exempt List. He will be eligible to play in the Broncos’ Week 7 game on Oct. 25 after missing six games. The NFL initiated an investigation under the Personal Conduct Policy following Cooper’s arrests in June. The league’s review remains ongoing and is not affected by this change to Cooper’s roster status.”
This past Monday, Cooper appeared in Douglas County court for a motions hearing one month prior to his scheduled jury trial. The trial was rescheduled for March 2027.
Cooper is still subject to future potential discipline by the NFL depending on the outcome of March’s jury trial, but until then, he will be eligible to play for the Broncos this season.
In Thursday night’s win against the Seattle Seahawks, the Broncos defense saw fellow outside linebacker Jonah Elliss carted off in the final minute of the fourth quarter with an apparent lower-leg injury that could land him on injured reserve. If Elliss does land on IR, that would open up a roster spot for Cooper to return to the active roster.
