Ex-Premier League star Marko Arnautovic squares up to Celtic player after creating history ...Middle East

Sport by : (talksport) -

Marko Arnautovic made history in the Europa League on Wednesday night, but he seemed more interested in starting a scrap.

The former Stoke City and West Ham forward scored an equaliser for Red Star Belgrade to deny Scottish giants Celtic three points.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side took the lead in the game through new signing Kelechi Iheanacho but they were pegged back ten minutes later by Arnautovic.

Austria international Arnautovic moved to the near post to get on the end of a pass across goal and tap in from close range through some defenders.

The 36-year-old then rushed to get the ball from the net, but while doing so, Celtic’s Liam Scales brushed shoulders with him.

And after a push, Arnautovic got angry, grabbing Scales and squaring up to him, with both players pressing their heads together.

The pair then had to be separated in the box to prevent any further trouble and they managed to avoid any cards.

It showed that Arnautovic has still not managed to shake his reputation of being quite a controversial player on the pitch.

He was involved in his fair share of incidents whilst at Stoke and West Ham in the Premier League between 2013 and 2019.

Not too long after his antics and goal, Arnautovic was substituted for the final 15 minutes of the League Phase clash.

And neither side managed to find a winner, sharing the points in their opening game of the new campaign.

History maker

Arnautovic’s goal created some remarkable European history, not that he seemed to care about that at the time.

His strike was his first in the Europa League / UEFA Cup since 2009 – 16 years and 217 days ago, to be exact.

He last scored in the competition for FC Twente as a 19-year-old.

And his next goal after that has come at the age of 36.

It’s the longest ever gap between goals scored by a player in the competition’s history.

Incredibly, Arnautovic also holds the same record in the Champions League, breaking it in 2023 with an almost 13-year gap between goals.

Life after the Premier League

The ex-Stoke and West Ham bad boy is now at Red Star Belgrade following a summer move from Inter Milan.

He is a boyhood Red Star fan and joined his beloved club after leaving Inter following four years in Italy.

Arnautovic spent three of those as a Bologna player, returning to Europe in 2021 by joining the Serie A side from Shanghai Port.

That move to China came after he asked to leave West Ham, ending his six-year spell in the Premier League.

He played 184 times in the top-flight, scoring 43 goals and providing 33 assists across his time with the Hammers and Stoke.

His goal tally of 43 makes Arnautovic the highest-scoring Austrian player ever in the division.
