The quarterback situations in the Sun Bowl featuring Arizona State and Duke will be polar opposites of each other.
ASU has been without its starting quarterback in Sam Leavitt since he left the Houston game on Oct. 25 twice with injuries, and he is now widely expected to enter the transfer portal — though he has not yet stated his plans himself.
Meanwhile, Duke has its $4 million quarterback in Darian Mensah playing in the game, after he already made it known he plans to return to Durham for next season.
Jeff Sims gave ASU a seasoned option to start in Leavitt’s place, as he had 28 Power Four starts already under his belt before starting the final four games of the regular season.
Sims will start the Sun Bowl, head coach Kenny Dillingham said. His college career, which began in 2020 when he started as a true freshman at Georgia Tech, will then come to an end.
Sims stuck around at ASU when he knew he’d be a backup this season, leading Dillingham to call him “everything that is right with college football.” So it only makes sense that it would be paid forward with the chance to go out on his terms in his final game.
Freshman Cam Dyer will also see some time after settling into the offense since being cleared from an ACL tear ahead of the Nov. 1 game at Iowa State.
Dyer’s workload will be much less than that of Sims, confined to packages with Sims carrying a 3-1 record as the “full-time starter” through the Iowa State, West Virginia, Colorado and Arizona games.
While the strides the freshman has taken while observed at practice are clear as he’s gotten more comfortable in the offense and with using his previously injured leg, he does still look the part of a true freshman who was cleared less than 2.5 months prior to the bowl game.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo said success in the setting for Dyer comes down to putting together a clean operation.
“I think (the key) really is to go into the game plan thinking can I execute what I gotta do, take care of the football, communicate with my guys (and we can) see what kind of temperament and poise he’s got,” Arroyo said. “It’s an awesome opportunity for a young guy to get in there in bowl season and get some action.”
The last time Dyer played in games was as a senior at Albuquerque La Cueva High School in New Mexico, ahead of tearing his ACL in the state championship game. That year, he totaled 1,993 passing yards (54.4%) with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, also rushing for 977 yards and 14 touchdowns on 97 carries.
The No. 141 overall prospect and No. 6 ATH in the 2025 class, he was previously slated to switch to wide receiver, the same move that ASU wide receivers coach Hines Ward once made himself.
For players like Dyer who haven’t played collegiately yet, providing game film to the rest of the nation two days before the transfer portal officially opens could be precarious for a team in ASU’s position.
Dillingham has already made it clear that ASU will seek a starting quarterback in the transfer portal, and Dyer has told reporters that he understands the situation and is betting on himself by competing through all of it.
Another aspect to consider: four-star incoming freshman quarterback Jake Fette is expected to join the team once bowl practices move to the site of the game in El Paso, Fette’s hometown.
He’ll be the second member of the 2026 freshman class to join the team, as running back Cardae Mack participated in the final Tempe practices. As a dual-threat quarterback in high school himself, Mack projects to be next in line for the Wildcat packages after Kyson Brown is gone.
Neither Fette nor Mack will be eligible to play in the bowl, but their early integration and participation can be incredibly valuable to their development.
ASU and Duke kick off the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl at noon on Wednesday. Hear it on ESPN 620 AM or the Arizona Sports app with pregame at 9 a.m., or watch it on CBS (streaming on Paramount+).
