BCCI reaches out to VVS Laxman
According to PTI, BCCI has once again reached out to VVS Laxman to check whether he’ll take over the duties of Test head coach from Gambhir. The ‘Head of Cricket’ at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru was approached after Rahul Dravid left in June 2024. Laxman denied taking the job then and has done the same again.
“His advantage being (that there) aren’t too many alternate options in red ball format since VVS Laxman isn’t interested in coaching the senior Test team,” a source told PTI.

Gambhir’s contract will end after the 2027 ODI World Cup. But his future may depend upon India’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup. BCCI is uncertain whether Gambhir is the right person to remain at the helm of the Test team with 9 matches remaining in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
Currently ranked 6th with 4 wins from 9 games, India has two overseas tours in 2026. 2-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August, followed by 2 matches against New Zealand in October. To end the cycle, Australia will tour India in January-February 2027 for a 5-match series.
Gambhir’s success at defending the T20 World Cup title at home could be crucial to his chance of continuing as Test coach. In any case, BCCI has over 7 months to decide whether his services are needed in red-ball cricket.
“Gambhir does have strong backing within the power corridors of Indian cricket, and obviously, if India retain the T20 World Cup or at least reach the final, he would be seamlessly continuing with his assignment. However, it would be interesting if Gambhir continues in Tests too,” the source added.
