ESPN Drops New Offseason Survey, NBA Injuries Adding Up, Did They Cave? And Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

I don’t miss this as a threat, but I recognize that it sounds like one: The Chicago Bulls officially start the 2025-26 regular season in less than a month.

The league will slowly but surely ramp up the action over the next handful of weeks. The process will start today, as a handful of teams will return to their respective facilities and meet with the media. Then, as soon as next Thursday, we’ll have some big-name stars suiting up for preseason basketball overseas.

Additionally, some important deadlines are approaching for teams still seeking to sign free agents and finalize their rosters. I jotted down all those key dates yesterday, as well as when you can expect to see the Chicago Bulls back at training camp.

NBA One Month Warning: Key Dates to Note in Lead Up to Regular Season ESPN’s Tim Bontemps polled 20 coaches, executives, and scouts for a wide-ranging offseason survey. As I’m sure you could have predicted, the Chicago Bulls were NOT well-represented across the poll. In fact, the organization only came up once, and it was in response to the exact question you shouldn’t want to be associated with. The Bulls received one vote for having the NBA’s worst offseason. Overall, eight teams were in the running, with the Pelicans holding the top spot (nine votes). The Bulls joined the Lakers, Grizzlies, 76ers, and Trail Blazers in receiving a singular mention. To be clear, there is no explanation given for why the anonymous person selected Chicago. I would guess that this person is more focused on the future forecast than the precise moves made. As far as I’m concerned, the Lonzo Ball and Isaac Okoro swap is the only thing worth criticizing. I’ve made clear my stance on the Josh Giddey contract (reasonable), and I also think that the Tre Jones deal could look like a steal in only a matter of months. Even the Noa Essengue selection in the lottery was fine. The Bulls need to take some big swings, and they did exactly that. Did they hit a home run … or even a double? Patience is the only way we’ll find that out. Nevertheless, if someone is having a hard time buying into the idea that this front office can fix things, I can not blame them. This offseason may have given Chicago a slightly better sense of direction, but they still project to be the same old Play-In Tournament team they’ve been for years. That’s why I continue to stress the importance of their financial flexibility and these expiring contracts. What the front office does during the regular season will be extremely telling. They must stay aggressive on the trade market and find a way to use at least some of these expiring deals to their advantage. Hard decisions on Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu, in particular, will have to be made. The flexibility this front office currently has can be a real benefit, but they have to know how to use it. They can’t simply put all their eggs in the free agency basket. This has become a worse and worse way to add impact talent. Instead, they either need to hit on some in-season trades or show a willingness to eat dead money for young talent/draft assets. The Chicago Bulls Do Have One Advantage: Lots of Expiring Contracts! I was hoping to see Matas Buzelis’ name potentially pop up on the survey. ESPN asked those polled to name the best player from the 2025 NBA Draft in five years, and only Flagg, Harper, and Bailey were mentioned. More fuel to the fire, Matas! I hate injuries. The 2025-26 season was already shaping up to be a strange one with Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum, and Damian Lillard likely out for the whole season. Fast forward to Monday, and we can now add Fred VanVleet to the list. While I recognize that he isn’t on the same tier as those other players, he has been an essential part of the Rockets’ return to relevancy. There is no question that he was going to play a pivotal role this season in leading the team alongside new addition Kevin Durant. So what does Houston do from here? Will they really rely on Reed Sheppard or Aaron Holiday? Could a trade be on the horizon? The Miami Heat have also landed in some trouble. Tyler Herro is expected to miss at least the first month of the season after experiencing a foot injury in an offseason workout that required surgery. KEEP THAT INJURY BUG OUT OF CHICAGO! Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes picked one word to describe every NBA team’s offseason. He went with “caved” for the Chicago Bulls. Of course, he’s focused on the four-year, $100 million contract that the team handed Josh Giddey. They were initially trying to hold their ground at around $20 million a season, while Giddey long wanted $30 million. The fact that they met in the middle has received its fair share of criticism, but (again) I’ve made clear that I don’t agree with that. It’s a perfectly fine deal for a perfectly fine player. There are so many other things to attack this franchise for after the last few seasons. Josh Giddey of the Chicago Bulls – © David Banks-Imagn Images BN BEARS PODCAST ALERT!
