Chicago Cubs Lineup: McGuire, Castro, Pete ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs managed four runs yesterday against the Reds, but the pitching failed, so they dropped Game 2 by a final score of 7-4. Porter Hodge may be pitching his way off the postseason roster, but that’s a story for another day. Plus, hey, he still has some time. In any case, here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the third of four games against the Reds in Cincinnati.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Moises Ballesteros, DH Dansby Swanson, SS Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Matt Shaw, 3B Willi Castro, RF Reese McGuire, C

Tonight would be a good night for Pete Crow-Armstrong to finally join the 30-30 club.

Cincinnati Reds Lineup:

TJ Friedl, CF Spencer Steer, 1B Gavin Lux, DH Austin Hays, LF Will Benson, RF Elly De La Cruz, SS Tyler Stephenson, C Ke’Bryan Hayes, 3B Matt McLain, 2B

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

Javier Assad’s last outing came in long relief (2.1 scoreless), but the Cubs have temporarily moved him back into the rotation to help give everyone else some extra rest. I’m not *entirely* sure how the Cubs intend to use Assad in the postseason, but I do think he’ll be a factor. So here’s to hoping he can stay healthy and effective, because his biggest innings may yet be ahead of him.

Cincinnati Reds: Zack Littell, RHP

Zack Littell’s results this season (3.86 ERA) are far FAR outpacing his peripherals (4.87 FIP, 4.54 xERA), in large part because he has a tiny 17.1% strikeout rate and isn’t particularly good at limiting hard contact (41.0%) or barrels (10%). That, plus a 40.8% fly ball rate isn’t exactly a recipe for success. But, hey, he has gotten the job done, including one pretty great start against the Cubs in early August: 7.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 8K.

That said, every since that start, reality has caught up to him: 5.40 ERA over 7 starts (36.2 IP).

NOTE: Littell is a righty, but he has actually carried reverse splits this season and for his entire career.
