The Cubs kicked off this brief three-day homestand by beating the Rays 6-4, and locking down their 84th win of the season.
That is notable – in a half-cheeky way, at least – because it means the Cubs cannot go back-to-back-to-back years winning only 83 games! Huzzah!
…
Matthew Boyd didn’t have a great day overall, but he did extend his Cubs record pickoff total to 11. The bullpen once again was incredible, throwing four straight perfect innings. — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 12, 2025 Big games for Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner, each of whom has been doing his best to carry the offense for a while now. The Cubs went down early in the game 3-0 courtesy of a big moment for an old friend, which we can more properly enjoy since the Cubs came back to win the game:Christopher Morel's first at-bat at Wrigley Field as a Cub: home runMorel's first at-bat at Wrigley Field as a Ray: pic.twitter.com/1di8xHRNOo
— MLB (@MLB) September 12, 2025 It’s been a tough go for Christopher Morel with the Rays, though he’s certainly started to turn it on of late (and he’s above-average at the plate since mid-June). Still only 26, there’s time for Morel to really break out in the way we hoped he could when he first flashed that potential with the Cubs. The Cubs went from day-to-day on Kyle Tucker’s calf for a week to finally putting him on the IL so he could fully rest it to now saying it’s unlikely he comes off the IL on Tuesday when his stint was up. In other words, the initial guess was that Tucker could be back in a few days, but the reality is that he was going to need MULTIPLE WEEKS. Quite a whiff. There’s hope he can be close a return by the time Tuesday rolls around, but I think we should holster any of those hopes until he’s actually on the field. Because what is going on, you know? In the meantime, maybe the Cubs can just keep on letting Moises Ballesteros get starts at DH while Seiya Suzuki plays right field? I understand the desire to get Willi Castro going, but if Ballesteros is ready to just hit-hit-hit in the big leagues, and you have a spot right now for him, then use it. And that assumes Suzuki comes back to play soon. He was out yesterday with an illness. Daniel Palencia (shoulder) played catch today, and it was sufficiently encouraging that the Cubs will have him throw again today with moderate intensity to see where he’s at. Today is the day for Anthony Rizzo. He returns to the Cubs to retire with the team, and to be celebrated for a tremendous career. Not to be forgotten is all that he accomplished in the community:The jersey I’ll be retiring in… signed by all the patients we have visited over the years who were battling cancer. @Cubs @LurieChildrens pic.twitter.com/MHf7ttz2au
— Anthony Rizzo (@ARizzo44) September 12, 2025 lmfao what:Walker Buehler lists several reasons why he doesn’t want the automated ball-strike system in MLB, including that “pitchers that pitched for a long time deserve certain parts of the plate that other guys don’t get.” pic.twitter.com/hnCK136zg4
— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) September 12, 2025 Pitchers who’ve pitched for a long time should get balls called as strikes. Seriously? That’s the argument? He could not have possibly thought that through.
