Offensive Explosion, Tucker Situation, PCA’s Break, Dodgers and Scott, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Cubs have the 4th best record in baseball. Just feel like we need to be reminded of that sometimes.

It was really, really good to see the bats exploded at Wrigley Field yesterday. Haven’t seen much offense in the second half, and it feels like that has been especially true at Wrigley. Appropriate that the Cubs went deep four times with Sammy Sosa in the house, too.

So that’s the happy set of highlights there. Now something less happy …

Kyle Tucker did not play yesterday, and his calf didn’t make progress on the off-day:

“He didn’t really make progress with the day off. He’s kind of in the same spot he was on Wednesday.”Craig Counsell provides an update on Kyle Tucker. pic.twitter.com/nohhBA90OF

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 5, 2025 So, the Cubs have lost one day of backdating so far by waiting to see if Tucker would be good to go on Friday (you can backdate an IL stint up to a maximum of three days). We’ll see if they give him another day, or if they just pull the trigger today on an IL stint. The Iowa Cubs scratched Owen Caissie last night, per Tommy Birch, which COULD be because they wanted him to be able to come to Chicago quickly if Tucker hits the IL. Obviously this is not good news. The Cubs need a healthy and productive Tucker – they’d finally gotten him back! – to be the best version of their offense down the stretch and into the postseason. Whatever decision is made from here, it needs to be ENTIRELY about getting Tucker into the best possible place by the end of the month. If that means a week off? Do it. If that means waiting a couple days to see if he can play and stay sharp at the plate? Do it. Relatively speaking, wanting to have him back ASAP specifically in order to win this weekend’s games should not be the priority (especially since his presence might not be the difference anyway). Every year:

— Michael Cerami (@Michael_Cerami) September 5, 2025 Pete Crow-Armstrong, who drove in a couple and had a couple hits in his return to the lineup, on his mini break:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 5, 2025 And more on PCA’s development this year, and work with Craig Counsell and the veterans on the team:

Carlos Santana pulled Pete Crow-Armstrong to the side and gave the Cubs star a pep talk after being out of the lineup. He’s one of four people who have helped guide the budding star. With @TonyAndracki23: t.co/aBZ05tOD4l

— Andy Martínez (@amartinez_11) September 6, 2025 The leverage was low, but dang, how good did Porter Hodge look yesterday in the 9th? We know it’s *possible* that something can just click for a guy like that, and suddenly he’s back to being as awesome as he was last year:

We're just a few months removed from thinking he's arguably the best bullpen arm on the team. It's not a matter of his abilities, just commanding his pitches even competently.

— Matt Clapp (@TheBlogfines) September 5, 2025 © Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Wrigley Field has been so extreme the last several years:

The wind is blowing out at Wrigley for just the 16th time in 68 games this season. Teams (combined) avg 12.9 runs per game when it blows out compared to 7 when it blows in.

Did you see that hat Sosa was wearing just now? Yeah, that's @obvious_shirts Get one here: t.co/U9XjKOQOpd pic.twitter.com/iQhTl6lDrb

— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) September 5, 2025 The Dodgers are looking more and more like they might be the third-place-division-winner, i.e. the one that has to play in the Wild Card round:

— Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) September 6, 2025 To that end, all the more reason to want to finish in the top two Wild Card spots if you’re the Cubs, since then you would not have to face the Dodgers (who would get the games at home, even if the Wild Card team has a better record, too). The Cubs are currently 5.0 games up on both the Padres and Mets for the top Wild Card spot. Also, re that Dodgers loss … oof, Tanner Scott. I know that Ryan Pressly did NOT work out for the Cubs, but, given the deal Scott got and what he was expected to be, the signing has been a disaster so far for the Dodgers. He has 20 saves and 8(!) blown saves, together with a below-league-average ERA and FIP. We can’t say what would’ve happened if he’d taken the Cubs’ offer (which was apparently for more money than the Dodgers’ deal he accepted when accounting for deferrals), but if he was this bad and the Cubs had signed him for four years and $72 million? Yikes. MORE CUBS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
