Earlier this week, the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim was completed after 68 swimmers came together to swim a 411 mile relay swim over the course of a month.
The swim started on July 26, 2025 and covered the more than 400 miles from the Edmund Fitzgerald wreck site to the Detroit Belle Isle Beach, covering the freighter’s original route to Detroit.
The original Edmund Fitzgerald ship set sail in 1975 to haul more than 26,000 tons of iron ore before going down due to the 1975 Lake Superior Storm. There were 29 people who died in the tragedy, and the swim was created to honor those individuals.
The swim had its challenges, with the race coming to a stop for five days after the tugboat that was escorting the swimmers began leaking oil. The swim was paused again a few days later, when a boat battery began to die, but they were able to get back on track to complete the swim on August 14th. Despite this hold-up, the race only took one day longer than expected and came to it’s conclusion on Wednesday, August 27th.
This relay race was completed by 68 swimmers who were divided into teams of four per stage of the race. They completed half-hour rotations of swimming while hauling iron ore pellets to present to the mayor of Detroit at the end.
The final stage of the swim was 30.5 miles across Lake St. Clair and the four relay swimmers who completed the leg were given the opportunity to present the pellets themselves during the memorial service at the Mariners’ Church of Detroit.
On top of honoring the fallen, the swim also raised nearly $200,000 for the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, according to CBC news, which the society plans on using to restore the Whitefish Point Light Station, the lighthouse the ship was headed for when it sank.
