The California Highway Patrol plans to set up a DUI checkpoint at 8 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

The checkpoint, in an unnamed unincorporated area of San Diego County, will continue until 2 a.m. the following morning.

The deterrent effect of checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol- or drug-involved crashes, authorities said in a news release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20% when well-publicized checkpoints and proactive patrols are routinely conducted.

Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, the CHP said.
