Beloved children’s author Mo Willems is finally writing a book for adults! And if you’ve ever wondered, “How does he come up with those fanciful narratives and whimsical drawings?”, you have an answer.

Per Willems’ publisher, Hachette Book Group, Words and Pictures by Mo Willems: Writing About Stories, Stories About Writing, “Delivers a personal, philosophical, and pragmatic look at the art of writing for children.” According to the book’s description, the collection of over 25 essays is “an in-depth study of his writing process, explores his philosophy on writing for children, and dissects one of his picture books—cover to cover—to give readers a behind-the-scenes look at his creative process.”
The exploratory look at Willems’ process doesn’t start with his popular kid-lit titles. This book goes back to the author’s days as a writer and animator on Sesame Street (where he won six Emmys), providing a complete context for his work.
Willems recently talked candidly to People about the book, revealing, “It is exciting to share my thoughts, personal history, artistic influences, creative experiments, and writing process with a grown-up audience. There is no right or wrong way to create.”
He continued, “I hope this collection of anecdotes, explorations, drawings, doodles, and story breakdowns encourages readers to rediscover the joy that is central to the act of making up their own stories.”
Willems also shared an Instagram post featuring a sneak peek at the new book and the caption, “I am giddy excited about the cover reveal for my upcoming adult book WORDS & PICTURES, a copiously illustrated memoir, guide to writing for children, and encouragement for all creators that comes out next spring. This experiment has been many years in the making.”
