Here Come the Starters, Trusting Ben Johnson, Ominous Lions Injury Notes, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

You can’t tell me manifestation isn’t real when I manifested TS12 dropping during the Bears bye week in this space atop Tuesday’s BN Bears Bullets. I’m saving my next manifestation attempt at getting Chicago’s football team into the postseason in Ben Johnson’s first year as a head coach.

ICYMI: Bears starters *WILL* play in Sunday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. So if you had Sunday night plans that did not include watching this team, I’d recommend changing them while you can. This will be our first look at quarterback Caleb Williams and the rest of the starters in Ben Johnson’s offense. I will be curious to see how many starters on the Dennis Allen-led defense will get an extended look. In any case, we have more reasons to tune in for Sunday’s game than we had to check in for Week 1 of the preseason. Reporters from the Tribune, Sun-Times, Marquee, ESPN, and 670 The Score have more on the decision to play the starters in Preseason Week 2. I am vibing with Kyle Brandt’s message to trust Ben Johnson in his process as this team gears up for the regular season:

“Caleb Williams needs to play in the preseason!!”Response: pic.twitter.com/0Q0bckITDu

— Kyle Brandt (@KyleBrandt) August 12, 2025 More from Kyle on the new Bears head coach and reaction to how he is handling things thus far:

“Trust Ben Johnson and what he is doing. For years, maybe even decades, there has been whining about we need to get this coach and we gotta get this coach. And Ben Johnson was the kind of coach the Bears were just never going to get. It was a surprise. It was a lightning bolt when they got him. So you got the guy you want. You got the kind of guy you want. Don’t tell me in the second of August, now that you finally got him, that you don’t know about this Ben Johnson. Why isn’t he playing Caleb in the preseason?

Shut your mouth, be patient. This is the mad genius that you wanted. You got him. So let him do his thing.”

On the one hand, I like to keep some space for fair criticism of a Bears coach. However, on the other hand, it is hypocritical for the same people who said they were willing to give Ben Johnson the keys to the Ferrari also to be the same ones complaining about how he is driving too fast. You can’t have it both ways. And if you try to have it both ways, don’t feel shellshocked when people call you out on your hypocrisy. Seriously … what was the point of pushing hard for the Bears to hire Ben Johnson if you weren’t going to be willing to hand over your on-the-field football operations to him? Whether his methods succeed or fail is to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, enjoy the ride knowing that there is a wide-ranging belief that this franchise is in better hands with him calling the shots than it was before he arrived. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Josh Alpier (Pro Football Talk) has injury updates regarding the Detroit Lions that can best be described as a mixed bag. The good news for the Lions is that cornerback Terrion Arnold returned to practice after missing time with a hamstring injury that popped up in late July. But the bad news from Detroit is that tight end Sam LaPorta “will be out for a little while” because of an undisclosed injury. There are still 25 days between now and Week 1, so this might not be a huge deal. However, it does seem ominous. Stay tuned. Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs co-signs Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis as a starting-caliber NFL quarterback…

— Dominique Yates (@RealDYates) August 12, 2025 … and if that is the case, then maybe he can start in Green Bay. Are the Miami Dolphins dealing with a Bears-related hangover? Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said the team isn’t showing the energy he is accustomed to during the team’s joint practice sessions with the Lions. Here is a quote that stands out from his latest media session:

“Some of the frustrating things like I said were we couldn’t get ourselves jumpstarted as an offense. We couldn’t gain that momentum to where, OK, all we needed was one play and then jumpstart the offense whether it was move the ball, whether it was one of the third down team periods, another team period, red zone. It just felt like we didn’t have the energy that we’re used to when we practice and when we play against opponents, so that’s what I’m talking about when I talk about it was frustrating today.”

I wonder if teams will have second thoughts about scheduling joint sessions with the Bears and Lions in the future because it sounds like the Dolphins are riding the struggle bus right now. This is neat: Legendary football broadcaster Brent Musberger is joining the CBS NFL pregame show (a.k.a. The NFL Today) for the network’s 50th anniversary tribute in Week 3. Football broadcasting wouldn’t be what it is today without Musberger’s contributions, so I look forward to taking time out of my Sunday morning pre-game ritual and checking that out. Happy schedule release day! Really curious to see who they start the season against at the United Center. Bulls have been downright embarrassed in three-straight home openers. 128-96 L (CLE) — 2022-23 124-104 (OKC) — 2023-24 114-95 (OKC) — 2024-25
