The opening evening session from the pool swimming competition at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships is upon us, and although there’s only one individual final on tap tonight, there promises to be some exciting racing across the board.
Along with the final of the men’s 400 IM, we’ll see semi-finals in the women’s 100 free and 200 back, and the men’s 100 breast and 50 fly, before the session concludes with finals of the 4×200 free relay for both genders.

Grousset’s status for the meet was unknown given he’s recently been dealing with foot injury that caused him to withdraw from the French Elite Championships in June, but clearly he’s on good form.
In the women’s 100 free semis, world record holder Marrit Steenbergen will be the one to watch after she reset the championship record in the prelims, clocking a comfortable 52.62, while fellow Dutch woman Milou van Wijk was the #2 qualifier this morning in 53.00.
Then we’ll see the final of the men’s 400 IM, where, with Leon Marchand out of the field, Russia’s Ilia Borodin has to be considered the favorite after pacing the prelims in 4:13.10. Borodin won the LC Euro title in 2021, and was the bronze medalist at last summer’s World Championships.
The women’s 200 backstroke is an event that’s looking incredibly wide open this week, and it was pretty tame this morning with seven swimmers sub-2:11 and only one, Great Britain’s Katie Shanahan, cracking 2:10 in 2:09.29.
The men’s 100 breast has a star-studded field that’s led by Adam Ramsay-Peaty, who was the top qualifier into the semis after clocking 59.08 this morning—faster than the 59.65 he produced en route to bronze at the Commonwealth Games in late July.
The field also features reigning Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi (59.11), Ireland’s Jack Kelly (59.27) who’s fresh off breaking a national record in the prelims, and 10 more men who broke 1:00 in the heats.
Wrapping with the relays, the Russian Neutral Athletes ‘B’ women paced the 4×200 free relay this morning in 7:54.17, while Great Britain, who was SwimSwam’s predicted winner, lurks out in Lane 2 after going 7:58.84 in the prelims.
The fastest individual split in the prelims came from Lithuania’s Ieva Jurkunaite in 1:56.52, though it wasn’t enough to push them into the final as they took 10th.
The Germans lead the men’s race into the final after going 7:04.83 in the morning, led by a 1:45.84 opening leg from Lukas Märtens, while Great Britain, which will be making some substitutions, is close behind at 7:05.07 after 1:45 splits from Jack McMillan and Tom Dean in the prelims.
