Slovakia take nominal pole position with lane 4 in the second heat, but it will be Italy in lane 5 and 2025 World Champions Great Britain – who have won not won this relay at the European Championships since 2018 – in lane 7 who will draw the eyes.
Great Britain rest James Guy, Matt Richards, and Duncan Scott, but still field a team of swimmers who have all been at least 1:46 this season. Tom Dean features after splitting 1:45.63 at the Commonwealth Games, and is joined by Gabriel Shepherd, Tyler Melbourne-Smith, and Jack McMillan.
Italy rest national record holder Carlos D’Ambrosio, but otherwise go with their full-strength team, and Germany lead off with Lukas Martens as they opt for their top four swimmers this morning, aiming to claim lane 4 for the final tonight.
Turkey use their European Junior Champion Ahmet Mete Boylu on the leadoff, while Lithuania rest the man who finished 2nd behind him in Munich, Tajus Juska, but go with three of the four men who won gold on this relay two years ago.
Spain leave off national record holder Luca Hoek Le Guenedal, but still look strong with Miguel Perez-Godoy and Cesar Castro Valle, while France rest Leon Marchand for tonight’s final, but will need big sswims from 17-year-old Sauveur Cristofini and European Championships debutants Neo Dutriaux and Pierre Largeron.
Two of the four athletes who were on the world junior record-setting 4×200 free relay for Neutral Athletes B at the European Junior Championships last month feature this morning, with Mikhail Shcherbakov and Grigorii Vekovishchev joined by Andrei Cherepkov and Roman Akimov, as Ivan Girev and Aleksanr Shchegolev are rested for tonight.
Ireland opt to use Dan Wiffen this morning, giving us an idea of what he can do in the 800 free tomorrow morning. Franko Grgic, who won World Junior titles in the 800 free and 1500 free, features for Croatia at his first major international meet since then.
