August 10-16, 2026 Paris, France — Olympic Aquatics Centre LCM (50 Meters) Meet Information Meet Central Entries SwimSwam Preview Index Prelims Recaps: Day 1 Live ResultsSwimmers wasted no time putting up some speedy performances during the very first prelims session of the 2026 European Championships taking place in Paris, France.
Ireland alone downed two national records during the heats, both on the men’s side, as Liam Custer and Jack Kelly each made his presence known on the big stage.
First, Florida-born Custer ripped a lifetime best of 4:22.55 in the prelims of the men’s 400m IM.
That rendered the Stanford Cardinal in 17th place and, although that wasn’t enough to move on to tonight’s final, it erased his former PB of 4:23.14 established at the Irish Open & Commonwealth Trials this past April.
His performance also shaved .02 off the former NR of 4:22.57 Jack Cassin put on the books three years ago en route to becoming Ireland’s fastest 400m IMer in history. Splits for Custer’s swim are below.
The second Irish standard to fall came in the heats of the 100m breaststroke, where former Brown University standout Jack Kelly ripped a new lifetime best of 59.27 to claim the 4th seed.
Opening in 27.36 and closing in 31.91, Kelly positioned himself nicely behind Adam Ramsay-Peaty of Great Britain (59.08) and a pair of Italians in Nicolo Marteninghi and Simone Cerasuolo who both clocked 59.11.
As for Kelly, his outing this morning took a big chunk of time off his previous PB of 59.72 which was posted last December at the U.S. Open. Splits for that older performance included 27.62/32.10.
We’ll see what the now Bob Bowman-trained Kelly has in store during this evening’s semi-finals of the event.
