Triple-A Iowa Cubs

It was a tough day at the plate for the Iowa Cubs in their finale with the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates). While the pitching was quite good, the bats never rose to the occasion as they were one-hit in the 2-0 loss. Josh Fleming, Shelby Miller, Hoby Milner, Tyler Ferguson, and Ethan Roberts combined to give up just the two runs on eight hits and only one walk, but the help just wasn’t there offensively.

The lone hit of the afternoon for the Cubs came off the bat of Ben Cowles, which was a single in the top of the second. Cowles also reached on a walk later in the matchup, as did BJ Murray. But that was it for the Cubs in terms of offensive production, and Iowa fell 2-0.

Notable Performances

Ben Cowles | 1-2, BB, SB Hoby Milner | 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, K Ethan Roberts | 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB

FINAL: Indians 2, Cubs 0 | Box Score

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

The Smokies got out to an early lead but unfortunately lost it late against the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds) on Sunday. In the first inning, Miguel Useche gave the Smokies a lead with a sac fly, then, in the fourth, Carter Trice belted a solo homer to make it 2-0. In the fifth, Kevin Valdez gave up his only one of the afternoon, which was an unearned run that came on a throwing error. Valdez, other than that blemish, was outstanding. He went six innings, allowed just the one run, issued three hits and a walk, and struck out six.

When Valdez departed, the Smokies held a 2-0 lead entering the seventh. In the top of the seventh, Knoxville put up a three-spot to give themselves a little distance from the Lookouts. Karson Simas, Kane Kepley, and Andy Garriola all came up with RBI singles to make it 5-1. Unfortunately, Marino Santy came on in the bottom of the seventh and gave those three runs right back on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth, but things fell off the rails. Grayson Moore and Frankie Scalzo Jr. combined to load the bases with one out. Scalzo Jr. then hit a batter to bring in the tying run and gave up an RBI single for the walk-off loss.

Notable Performances

Carter Trice | 1-3, HR Karson Simas | 2-4, R, RBI Kevin Valdez | 6.0 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 6 K, BB

FINAL: Lookouts 6, Smokies 5 | Box Score

High-A South Bend Cubs

While the Iowa Cubs and Knoxville Smokies had some disappointing losses, the South Bend Cubs had an easy-going 13-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins). Every Cubs starter had at least one hit on the afternoon, with Alexey Lumpuy leading the way with three. Josiah Hartshorn starred yet again, going 2-4 with a home run and a pair of RBI.

Cedar Rapids actually took the opening lead in this one, getting on the board in the top of the first on a solo homer. But other than that blemish, Ethan Flanagan was solid through four innings of work. In the bottom of the first, the Cubs took the lead after a throwing error allowed two runners to score, and from there, they never looked back. In both the third and fourth, South Bend put up four runs, boosting that 2-1 lead to 10-1, and from there they went on cruise control.

The game did enter a rain delay in the eighth with the Cubs up 13-1, and it was eventually called.

Notable Performances

Josiah Hartshorn | 2-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB Alexey Lumpuy | 3-5, 3 R, 2 SB Michael Hallquist | 1-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, SB

FINAL/8: Cubs 13, Kernels 1 | Box Score

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Like the South Bend Cubs, Myrtle Beach surrendered an early lead in their matchup with the Columbia Fireflies (Rays), but they, too, came back and cruised to a drama-free win. Anhuar Garcia found himself in an early jam in the first with runners on second and third with one out, but he was able to escape with just one run being plated. From there, he threw three more spotless innings with no more runs allowed and racked up seven strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Derik Alcantara came up clutch with an RBI triple, then Fernando Cruz had one of his four hits on the afternoon, doubling in Alcantara to make it a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, with the score still the same, Jose Silva drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1, then Ethan Conrad cleared the bases with a double, bringing in three runs and breaking the game wide open. Conrad finished the day with a whopping six RBI, as he added a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.

On the mound, after Garcia departed, David Bracho, Jordan Henriquez, and Sam Mettert cruised through the rest of the game, combining to allow just one hit and no walks. It was a complete effort, and the Pelicans took home a 10-1 win.
