2026 AUSTRALIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
September 29th – October 2nd Prelims at 10am local (8pm ET previous night)/Finals at 6pm local (4am ET) Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre SCM (25m) Meet Central Australian SC Worlds Selection Criteria Live Results Recaps: Prelims: Day 1 Finals: Day 1Edward Sommerville set the tone for what was a blistering day on the men’s side on the opening night of competition at the 2026 Australian Short Course Championships, setting a new national record in the 200 freestyle.
Sommerville, 21, went out like a rocket, turning in 23.20 at the 50 and 48.13 at the 100, which isn’t too far off the pace of American Luke Hobson when he set the world record in 2024 (23.18 at the 50, 47.87 at the 100).
Despite falling off a tad on the last 50, closing in 26.29, Sommerville put up a final time of 1:40.16 to knock two-tenths of a second off the Oceanian and Australian Records of 1:40.36, set by Max Giuliani at the 2024 Short Course World Championships in Budapest.
Sommerville also broke his own All-Comers Record of 1:40.59, set last year, though Hwang Sunwoo notably won the 2022 short course world title in Melbourne in a time of 1:39.72, though that hasn’t been ratified as an All-Comers Record.
Although he went out fast, Sommerville was much more conservative than he was en route to setting the All-Comers Record last year, having ripped through the 100 in 47.32 and the 150 in 1:13.11 before falling off coming home.

Sommerville is coming off a relatively subpar long course season by his standards, having been relegated to relay-only duties at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, though he did walk away with two gold medals including swimming in the final for the Aussie men’s 4×200 free relay.
At the Pan Pacific Championships in August, he had a strong showing in the 100 free, placing 6th in 48.03, and split 47.34 on the Aussie men’s 4×100 free relay that won silver. He was off form in the 200 free, however, placing 25th in the individual race (1:48.05), which resulted in him being left off the 4×200 free relay squad.
