Australian Olympian Moesha Johnson has taken to her Instagram to publicly criticize World Aquatics’ offer for her to participate in the Open Water World Cup Athletes’ Experience Program.
Johnson shared an email from World Aquatics, sent on behalf of Captain Husain Al Musallam, President of World Aquatics, which was also sent to several elite athletes, detailing a financial offer to compete in the World Cup to help cover travel and other expenses that come with the role.
The amount in question… $2,500 USD. This will be paid out to athletes after the conclusion of the last of the five World Cup stops.
Johnson’s message to World Aquatics is another chapter in the efforts of aquatic athletes fighting for better financial benefits and pushing back against feeling underpaid and undervalued.
She dissected the email section by section, sharing her thoughts and opinions on each portion, with one big theme: the value, or lack thereof, that World Aquatics puts on its athletes.
World Aquatics Email (Part 1):
Dear Moesha,
We hope you are well!
As we look ahead to the 2026/2027 Open Water Swimming World Cup, we are excited to bring the Athletes’ Experience Programme back to the event with a new format that will create opportunities for more athletes to take part and engage with the sport’s global community.
Johnson’s Response (Part 1):
This has to be spoken about. @world_aquatics
The World Cup series consisting of 5 stops all over the world brings together the world’s best athletes. A series designed to bring action, inspire communities and future generations and to bring high class and fast tactical racing.
And yet the offer made to these same athletes is so unbelievably low it raises big questions:
What value do you actually place on us, our sport, and its future?
Because an offer like this doesn’t just affect athletes today. It sends a message about how much our sport is valued — and how seriously its future, including its place on the Olympic stage, is being treated.

Dear Captain
Maybe take a moment to consider the invitation — and just how embarrassing this email is to elite athletes.
Athletes of our calibre in other sports are being offered millions in some cases, and hundreds of thousands in others.
And this is what we are being offered for competing at the highest level of our sport?
Maybe it’s time to seriously reconsider what you believe elite athletes — and our sport — are worth.
World Aquatics Email (Part 3):
Over the past few seasons, World Aquatics has engaged with athletes to better understand the logistical and financial challenges of competing on the World Cup. We recognize the immense dedication required to perform at this level and want to ensure that our organizational support aligns with that commitment. One of the key takeaways from these discussions is that travel expenses can often make it difficult for athletes to attend all of the World Cup stops.
Johnson’s Response (Part 3):
I genuinely cannot understand how you can value elite performance this way.

The immense dedication, sacrifice and commitment required to compete at this level cannot possibly be reflected in an offer like this.
This is not just about the money. It is about the value you place on the sport and the athletes who make this sport what it is.

To help address these costs, World Aquatics is pleased to offer you financial support of USD 2,500 for your participation in the Open Water Swimming World Cup. For your financial planning, please note that this payment will be issued following the conclusion of the final World Cup stop.
Johnson’s Response (Part 4):
$2,500.
For 5 stops. ALL OVER THE WORLD.
For an ENTIRE season.
For a world number 1 ranked athlete.
It takes everything to be at this level and this is what you offer.
**And it’s not the first year we’ve had this conversation. But it’s time people know what is actually being offered to athletes at the highest level of our sport.**
It’s clear to me you don’t support open water or want it for our future.
