HOPEWELL, N.Y. — A driver is dead after crashing into a tree in the Town of Hopewell on Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 7 a.m. on State Route 5 & 20. Ontario County sheriff’s deputies say they found the driver dead at the scene. The driver was the only one inside the car.

The sheriff’s office says speed appears to have been a factor but it’s still investigating the cause of the crash. The victim’s name hasn’t been released yet.

Route 5 & 20 was closed between Freshour Road and Mumby Road for hours but has since reopened.
