A secret posthumous memoir written by legendary country music icon Dolly Parton has been bought for $13 million by Grand Central Publishing in a heated bidding war, Page Six reports.
Parton, who died in August at the age of 80, had reportedly been working on the book in secret, but it’s unclear exactly what it will cover.
“Dolly worked up until the day she died. She loved seeing her dreams come to life, and loved knowing her work brought people joy. Ever the planner, Dolly worked with the team that she handpicked, for the past several years to build a project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come,” her manager Danny Nozell said following her death. “Many projects were in various stages of development, and we want to be transparent with her fans about this fact. If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences, and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it.”
The book was sold by the literary agency Folio, which also represented Parton’s 2023 book “Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.”
Sources told Page Six that when they told publishers they had a $12 million offer: “No one believed them, so they all stopped bidding [and] Folio went back to editors.” Most came back and said they couldn’t beat that, but “Grand Central did improve” the offer and “won the book.”
There were differing reports from sources to the outlet about the final price, with many saying it hit $13 million, while another source said it was a lower amount by “involved a bigger cut of the royalties than usual with a 50/50 split.”
In comparison to Parton’s memoir selling for $13 million, Britney Spears signed a book deal for $15 million in 2022, while Bruce Springsteen’s was for more than $10 million in 2016.
