Chicago Cubs Lineup: Try Winning a Game, Cubs ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — My goodness. Win an effing game, Cubs. For the love of god. The Brewers have won five straight, and we’re on the doorstep of being swept at home by the Reds.

Save us, Justin Turner.

An entire day off for Kyle Tucker, which feels appropriate at this point, both because of how he’s looked the last few games, and also because of the off-day tomorrow. We don’t know if there’s a lingering issue with the finger or not, but regardless, just give the guy a couple days to rest and reset.

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP

After a meh outing against the Twins before the All-Star break, Cade Horton has gone on a nice little three-game scoreless streak:

vsBOS: 5.2 IP, 2H, 0ER, 3BB, 4K@CHW: 6.1 IP, 4H, 0ER, 1BB, 3KvsBAL: 5.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 3BB, 3K

I’m still moderately surprised by the lack of strikeouts overall, but he’s making it work with an excellent 47.3% groundball rate this season. Maybe he’s not yet the front of the rotation arm we hope he can still blossom into, but it’s difficult to be anything but impressed with his debut season.

Cincinnati Reds: Andrew Abbott, LHP

Oh, cool. A left-handed starting pitcher with a 2.15 ERA over 19 starts. That should help the broken Cubs offense wake up …

Abbott, 26, is having a killer year for the Reds, and it hasn’t slowed down lately with a 2.16 ERA over his last four starts against the Marlins, Mets, Rays, and Braves. Like Horton, Abbott doesn’t strike a lot of guys out (21.7%), but he’s also not walking batters and has done a really nice job at limiting the hard contact (32.4%).

The only thing he hasn’t done well is inducing groundballs (30.7%). Pretty much all of his contact is in the air one way (20.3 LD%) or another (49 FB%). But so much of his fly ball contact is weak or popped up. In fact, his 15.3% infield fly ball rate (the weakest type of contact) is the third-highest in MLB.

Abbott has traditional lefty/righty splits for his career, but has been split neutral this season.
