Mercedes is comfortably Formula 1’s championship battle, but behind the scenes a different race is gathering speed – the search for the least painful place to swallow an engine penalty.
With both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell now skating perilously close to their power-unit limits, Toto Wolff has admitted the team is already studying the calendar and weighing up where the inevitable grid drop might hurt least.
Antonelli’s situation tightened at Spa, where Mercedes fitted a fourth internal combustion engine after concerns emerged over his Silverstone unit. One more ICE change would trigger a 10-place penalty, while replacing both the engine and exhaust would double the punishment.
Russell is not far behind. A water-pressure issue in Hungary forced Mercedes to install a fourth power unit, leaving him similarly exposed with 12 races still to run.
But Wolff is not yet waving the white flag.
“In terms of engine penalties, I still very much hope we don’t need to take it,” the Mercedes chief said.
But hope is no longer the only strategy.
A painful homecoming?
The intriguing twist is Monza. On paper, the Italian Grand Prix offers long straights, overtaking opportunities and the possibility of charging through the field with a fresh engine.
Yet for local hero Antonelli, it would also mean starting from the back at his home race.
Wolff hinted that the emotional downside might actually become a competitive advantage.
“We need to decide when that is,” he continued, “when we need to take one, and which tracks.
“There could be one that can be very special for Kimi, but on paper, [it] looks like it’s a good place to take an engine penalty.
